Anatomy And Physiology Of Erection

In its flaccid state, the penis acts as a tube through which urine is passed directly from the bladder via the urethra. The urethra is also a conduit for the ejaculate, which can be expelled by the penis in both its flaccid and erect state. The penile urethra is encased by a sleeve of erectile tissue called the corpus spongiosum, which expands at the tip of the penis forming the glans and at the base forming the bulb. The function of the spongiosum is to maintain the patency of the urethra during sexual activity so that the ejaculate is not prevented from being expelled by a collapsed structure. The main erectile components of the penis are the left and right corpora cavernosa that communicate via perforations to affect a single erectile chamber. These two connecting bodies attach to the rami of the pelvis after turning through a surprisingly sharp angle to become the deep erectile crura.

Through the core of both cavernosa run the cavernosal arteries, which are branches of the internal pudendal artery, itself a branch of the internal iliac artery. The cavernosal arteries give rise to numerous helicine (spiral) artery branches. These channel blood into the trabeculae of smooth muscle that makes up the walls of the tiny sinusoids of the cavernosa. The walls of the artery and the sinusoids are lined by nitric oxide (NO) producing endothelial cells. The sinusoids drain into subtunical veins that lie on the inside of the tunica albuginea, which forms a tough, noncompliant layer around each of the erectile bodies. Blood escapes this boundary by passing through emissary veins that pierce it. Blood continues its journey through circumflex veins that surround the outside of the tunica albuginea and are sandwiched between it and the "Buck's fascia." They then drain into the deep dorsal vein on the upper surface of the penis. The other major arteries, veins, and nerves of the penis lie dorsally. The complexities of the penile machinery are encased in the thin superficial "Colles' facia," which in turn is surrounded by the subcutaneous cellular tissue and skin.

The nervous system of the penis is in three parts. The parasympathetic nerves are branches of spinal nerves S2-S4, which give rise to the so-called pelvic splanchnic nerves that pass around the posterior aspect of the prostate gland, forming the prostatic plexus. Passing forward, they form the cavernous nerves, which branch into the body of the penis. It is this parasympathetic system that is able to elicit an erection. The sympathetic nerves are branches of the sympathetic chain at levels T11-L2. These pass through the inferior mesenteric plexus, the superior hypogastric plexus, and the pelvic plexus and branch off to the organs involved in ejaculation. Overactivity of the sympathetic system (e.g., in the stressed individual) maintains a persistent state of detumescence, although not all sympathetic activity is inhibitory. The sensory nerves of the penis and scrotum are all branches of the pudendal nerve, which can be traced back to branches of S2-S4. With these systems in mind, it can be seen that an erection can be initiated by two independent mechanisms. The first requires tactile stimulation of the penis. The nerve impulses synapse in the spinal cord and form a reflex arc with nerves of the parasympathetic system responsible for the erectile response. The other mechanism involves the higher centers of the brain that interpret sensory and fantasy stimuli triggering an erotic response resulting in an erection. The erection starts with the stimulation of one or both of these systems in a neuronally modulated hemodynamic response.

The exact mechanism of neurotransmission in the erectile response is not yet fully understood. It appears, however, that a few neurotransmitters are of key importance. Nerve endings of the parasympathetic system release acetylcholine (ACh), which appears to have a modulatory effect but no direct action; vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is also released, causing tumescence but not erection; release of NO does cause erection. These neurotransmitters have all been isolated in penile erectile tissue, and the NO system is the one exploited by some of the current erectogenic oral preparations. NO is a potent smooth muscle relaxant and vasodilator produced by neurons and endothelial cells that contain the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). The effect of NO is to increase the amount of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) available in the smooth muscle. cGMP is a second messenger that is utilized in a cascade system in which the intracellular concentration of calcium ions is diminished so that the calcium dependent muscle relaxes. It has previously been noted that the erectile response can be very rapid and synchronized, and it has been found that individual smooth muscle cells are able to communicate directly with each other via gap junctions.

There is another similar second messenger system that utilizes cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). In cavernosal tissue, the controlling factors for levels of cAMP are prostaglandins. PGE1 activates prostanoid receptors, which stimulate adenylate cyclase to produce cAMP. Here again, the effect is to reduce the levels of intracellular calcium and produce smooth muscle relaxation. There are other pharmacological agents that employ this alternative mechanism to elicit an erection.

In order for a sustained erection to occur, there must be: dilatation of the arteries to allow more blood to enter the penis; engorgement of the sinusoids to establish rigidity; narrowing of the venous system to prevent blood leaking back out. The simple relaxation of smooth muscle is able to achieve this. The smooth muscle in the artery wall relaxes and the artery vasodilates. At the same time, the trabecular smooth muscle relaxes and blood is allowed to fill the enlarged sinusoids. As the pressure rises, the penis becomes more tumescent and the subtunical venules become compressed between the collagenated smooth muscle and the tunica albuginea, so that outflow is diminished. Hydraulic pressure within the cavernosa increases to about 100 mmHg so that the penis hardens and becomes fully erect. Further reflex contraction of the ischiocavernous muscles during sexual intercourse or masturbation produces a rigid erection with internal pressures of several hundred millimeters of mercury. The activation of the sympathetic nervous system, which occurs at ejaculation, releases the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, endothelin, and neuropeptide Y. These have an opposing action to that described earlier so that smooth muscle contracts once more. Blood flow into the penis diminishes and the subtunical veins are opened, allowing blood to escape again. The penis becomes flaccid.

Five Tips For Excellent Iron On Transfers For T-Shirts

It's obvious that iron on transfers for t-shirts are really the next best things in fashion. With a fantastic design, you can look your best while remaining entirely original. There are now a couple of services that offer designing and ironing services. Before you settle for any single service option, get a load of some great tips that'll ensure you'll get the best designs for your shirt.

#1- Try crystals for individuality.

Traditional transfer designs take on the form of colored designs that stick on fabric. These are actually quite attractive in themselves but if you want to look even flashier, crystal designs are the best way to go. You definitely can't fail to get some heads to turn on the street with a loud, sparkly design that reflects your personality. You can even announce your personal style even more by going for full custom iron on transfers.

#2- Go for Swarovski for small orders.

The best type of crystals to settle for is the Swarovski type. This type was specifically created to look a lot like diamonds so there's no doubt you will sparkle in a customized shirt. Swarovski crystals look so real, you might not be able to tell them apart from actual diamonds.

Depending on the ironing service you choose, color options can include gold, amethyst, ruby, peridot and emerald. The most popular however, is still the clear crystal option.

Because Swarovski crystals look a lot like diamonds, they are a bit expensive. They are therefore really best choices if you only plan to order a handful of iron on transfers for t-shirts.

#3- Go for rhinestones for bulk orders.

You might be interested in styling more than just one shirt. If you need custom designs for hundreds of shirts for an event or promotional campaign, you might just want to settle for rhinestones. Although these don't look as flashy as Swarovski crystals, they are still quite attractive and are truly the most economical options for bulk orders.

#4- Look for custom options.

Most service providers have pre set designs that you can choose from. You should however, really much rather go for a seller that can give you a selection of custom design choices. Some let you decide on font styles and design colors. The very best services however allow full customization so you can submit a completely original design.

#5- Look for fabric options.

Many service providers don't just focus on making transfer designs. They can also deliver completely ironed out designs on shirts. This is an excellent extra service feature for you especially if you are ordering for a big event. After placing an order, all you need to do is to wait for the shirts to arrive. Look for a service provider with many different fabric and shirt style options.

Stylish iron on transfers for t-shirts can really make you stand out from the crowd. That is however, only if you choose the right transfer options and service provider. Keep these essential tips in mind before placing an order for your designs to make sure you get only the best results.

Do You Know the Differences Between Yoga and Pilates?

Aside from being celebrities, what do Jennifer Aniston, Cindy Crawford, Hugh Grant, Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Uma Thurman, Rod Stewart and Kristi Yamaguchi have in common? They've all hopped on the yoga and pilates trend for physical toning and spiritual relaxation!

There are some similarities between yoga and pilates, notably that they both work towards sculpting the body and increasing flexibility. Neither exercise will work the heart or lungs like a cardiovascular workout will, but they both add to an overall state of mental and physical wellbeing.

Yoga and pilates are so similar that they're often fused together in workout videos and yoga pilates classes across America, although it's sort of a Western fusion. In India, it is something entirely different than the German-created pilates.

Clear differences between yoga and pilates include some of the following: First, it is an ancient Indian practice that dates back approximately 5,000 years, whereas pilates is an adaptation of it dating back eighty years to a German athlete, Joseph Pilate.

Secondly, in addition to physical activity, it is an entire holistic program that encompasses diet, meditation, breathing techniques, religious edict and a moral code; Pilates is simply a form of exercise and body sculpting technique.

Thirdly, it aims to unite mind and body, as well as cleanse the body of toxins, while pilates is fashioned to strengthen, define and improve posture. Additionally, in it, you are taught to inhale and exhale through the nose, whereas pilates employs the traditional athletic mode of breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth while performing an action.

Lastly, it can generally be done with just a mat (although sometimes props are used), while instructors ensure everyone's in proper form; pilates, on the other hand, has specific machinery designed to assist practitioners.

Athletes and dancers often engage in "pilates for sports" classes, either in large groups or one-on-one with an instructor. However, one needn't attend a class to get started with pilates -- in fact, there are many videos (Eleonora Goya, Dian Ramirez, Leslie Sansone, Kathy Smith, Denise Austin, Karen Voight, The Method yoga, MTV, Prevention, etc). Of course, you won't get quite the same workout without the elaborate weight systems, but it could be a good launching point for people who are curious but not quite ready to commit to a gym or studio.

Some of the most popular videos include:

- "Yoga Zone";

- "Living Yoga - AM/PM";

- "Total Yoga: The Flow Series";

- "Yoga: Mind & Body with Ali Macgraw";

- "Crunch Yoga Mama: Prenatal Yoga";

- "Yoga Practice For Strength";

- "Ashtanga Yoga with Richard Freeman";

- "The Power of Hatha Yoga" and;

- "Kundalini Yoga: With Grace and Strength."

For the practitioners seeking spiritual teaching as well, classes and center training are best. Choosing between either classes or videos is all just a matter of preference.

Exercise Video Review

When it comes to exercising, some people tend to become self conscious of themselves when they have to start working out in front of many strange people at a gym. At times it does not only have to be the gym, as people have the same self conscious or shy attitude when running, cycling, walking outdoors in a park for example. If this particular scenario is familiar to you then the best advise I can give you is get an exercise video immediately to work out in the comfort of your own home without the discomfort of strange people staring at you.

First remember to always analyse how much weight you need to lose and how much time you are prepared to dedicate to exercising before even starting to go hunting for the best exercise video that would suit you.

If you are a beginner it is most important to choose the right exercise video that suits your body and health fitness levels best. Be very cautious because there are tons of exercise videos out there in the market pace claiming to be the best choice for beginners when actually it is totally untrue and completely the opposite as they ca tend to be rather complicated. Beginners tend to have more problems when it comes to choosing an exercise video that best suits them as compared to a person who has been exercising regularly for some time so do not lose heart easily as this scenario is very common.

Doing a complete research is of course the first step and it goes without saying. Preferably this should be done via fitness magazines and good fitness websites to see what they have to say about the various exercise videos out there and what the most recommended choice is. Fitness magazines are filled with endless information especially from the reviews by fitness professionals such as safety level and skill levels of exercise videos. Trust me these people know what they are talking about and what exactly to do so listen to them and their advise as far as possible.

As for the internet, many variety of exercise video articles are readily available so best thing to do is to read as many of them as possible to gather up as much information as you can get your hands on. Information to look out for is for example how much weight did people lose using exercise videos? What is the time duration spent before seeing weight loss results? Did the people like the exercise videos and wherever possible how much of a rating did the video receive?

Take note that not all reviews are going to be 100% truthful and accurate so it is important to choose reviews that are longer and detailed with sufficient information before making a suitable choice on an exercise video for yourself. Remember, it never hurt to read more especially when it comes to something important such as health and fitness.

Ask yourself, how fit am I? How active have i been lately? When was the last time i did any sort of exercise? The answers to all these questions will be very important in your final decision for an exercise video so please be honest with yourself. If not then you might be at risk in harming your own health and injuring yourself if you end up following a video suited for an advanced group of people!

Begin with a video that introduces you and walks you through the first few steps of exercising based on your current fitness levels if you are a beginner. Also remember to take the warnings at the beginning of every exercise video very seriously and don't just ignore it. The warnings are there for a reason such as consulting with your doctors first before starting any exercise program. Keep yourself safe and fit rather than injured and sorry.

This advice goes for everyone including those who are considered fit and healthy. Again i would like to emphasis if you are suffering from any type of medical condition such as high blood pressure please consult with a doctor before going through with any purchase of an exercise video and a subsequent exercise plan.

Is Cellulite in the Stars?

Cindy Crawford has it. (She even cops to it in September's issue of Redbook). Britney had it, So did Uma, J.Lo and even Victoria Beckham (aka posh spice), according to a recent issue of Star magazine.

So just what is "it"? Why it's cellulite, of course. And when it comes to cellulite, stars are just like us... for better or worse.

Most of us are all too familiar with that lumpy, cottage cheese-like substance that can be found on our thighs, stomach, and butt. The good news is that there are a growing number of surgery-free options to help get rid of cellulite.

In a nutshell, cellulite refers to collections of fat that push against the connective tissue under your skin, causing the surface of the skin to dimple, pucker and basically look like a golf ball.

Cellulite is actually a direct result of your genes (if your mom has it, there is a good shot you will too), your gender (sorry ladies), the amount of fat on your body, your age, and the thickness of your skin.

So now that you know what causes cellulite, the question is what can you do about it. The answer? Lots!

For starters, there is Thermage, a non-surgical skin tightening procedure that uses radio waves to lift and firm skin in your stomach, knees, arms, legs, hands or butt. It can also be used with a special cellulite tip that works with the radio waves to penetrate deep within the skin's layers and smooth out the skin's surface. Thermage breaks down the cellulite and firms the surrounding skin. Results may be apparent after just one procedure.

Another technology, Velashape, uses bipolar radiofrequency energy to reduce the size of the fat cells along with infrared heat to tighten the skin. The result? A much reduced appearance of cellulite and a decrease in the circumference of the thighs (just ask Kim Kardashian).

Zerona is another option for banishing cellulite. Your doctor uses a "cold" laser to painlessly zap the fat cells beneath your skin. While technically this laser therapy targets fat, not cellulite, it may smooth cellulite as well.

So what about all those creams, potions and lotion and elixirs you keep seeing in the drug store and on TV that promise to help get rid of cellulite? Buyer beware, these are mostly snake oil. Few, if any, have been the subject of the same type of rigorous clinical trials as Thermage, Velashape and Zerona.

Even if you have been disappointed in the past, now may be a good time to check in with your doctor and find out about these new additions to his or her cellulite-shattering arsenal. There not just for celebs, you know.

Happiness Inc

Emotional intelligence studies by Daniel Goleman show that a third of teenagers in the US suffer from clinically deep depression, low self-esteem and a lack of self-worth. This isn't just an American problem with worldwide figures showing similar results across cultural and socio economic boundaries. In the last 50 years, despite the fact that we have earned double the amount of our Baby Boomer parents, who in turn made more than our Silent Generation grandparents, all that disposable income hasn't actually led to a significant rise in 'happiness' per person.

Let's face it, when you went out to play with friends and had no Playstation, internet or DVD players there was a certain satisfaction in creating your own entertainment that the fast food guzzling overweight kids of the Generation Z era will never know. According to Goleman, these reasons explain why we are seeing such a rise in alcoholism, drug addiction and religious fanaticism as extreme views and solutions find a greater number people looking, but unable to find 'something more'.

What is happiness? If you could guarantee it for all you staff and give it out as wages, would it be more cost-effective than your monthly wage expenditure? Many believe that happiness is the ultimate currency and therefore everything else is only useful as a means for leading towards the basic pursuit of achieving more of it.

But could we truly be 100% happy? Probably not. I love my wife's Thai green chicken curry, but eating it all the time wouldn't make me happier. In fact eventually, I would get sick of it. This is because a large part of the pleasure comes from the change experienced having eaten other foods.

By the way, don't tell her this.

As scientists and economists can only gauge a breakthrough by comparisons to a controlled state, so we also appreciate things that make us happy by knowledge of those which didn't.

So what makes us happy? Needless to say, positive thinking comes into it. Research analyzing diaries kept throughout their test subjects lifetimes, discovered that those who were positive from their teenage years lived on average 10 years longer than those who were negative. Giving gratitude daily and acknowledging good times helps sustain this.

Author Tal Ben-Shahar believes that we automatically relate to 3 different types of life philosophy.

1) The Rat Racer

To this person everything is about working hard to get success tomorrow. The idea being when finally it does come, they can just relax, have fun and enjoy their hard earned spoils. The 'when' never actually arrives. Since their childhood, education and their working life, pain has always equaled gain and the competition is always looking to eat you up and spit you out. Later on during their mid-life crisis, they realize that they have never actually been happy and that everything they have ever done was either for someone else or for a satisfaction which they've never experienced. Sure they know how to be a workaholic, but they are as remote from their children as their parents were from them never knowing how to be happy, just how to work harder.

2) The Hedonist

This person lives for today and as many pleasures as they can possibly get their hands on. Tomorrow is a term that doesn't matter each new day they just look for the quickest way to get happy and zone in on that whether they do so alone or with friends. They can often fall foul of gambling debts, substance abuse or similar conditions created by a lack of long term thinking and planning.

3) The Nihilst

For this group, the world is a cold and uncaring place. Everyone only bothers about themselves and tomorrow will probably be even worse than today was. There is no point in planning anything as it won't make any difference. The whole world seems to conspire against your happiness, so it is better just to stay small and keep yourself to yourself.

I personally advocate a fourth category:

4) The Life Designer

This person aims to combine the most useful parts of the Hedonist with The Rat Racer. This means enjoying what makes you happy today whilst planning for a way to make this a permanent state of mind in the future. That means employing business thinking to make more of the things which make you happy. This means taking a job which challenges and engages you in an environment that rewards you surrounded by people who respect your spiritual identity and journey. The Life Designer understands that the journey itself is more important than the arrival.

You will probably recognize people you know from the above examples.

So how do we all move forward and create more current and long term happiness? Well, the answer relates to your own perception and self-awareness.

Once you are aware of which category, which your philosophies have been fitting into, you are then able to start the change to make yourself a Life Designer too.

Once you are ready to do that, let me know.

Oprah Could Not Have Known

If Oprah had known the facts I am about to share with you, would she have sanctioned the Baby Care gifts shown to possibly be contaminated with carcinogens?

In October, 2004, Oprah's Biggest Baby Shower took place at Fort Campbell, in Kentucky, USA. 640 mothers-to-be shared in some wonderful gifts from sponsors, at a special day organised by Oprah's team. It was a fantastic success, as with every thing that Oprah has a hand in.

Celebrities joined in, including Denise Richardson, Cindy Crawford and Heather Locklear.

Things may have been different... if Oprah had had the recent report from Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, testing 48 different Baby Care and children's skin care products. In March 2009, the Campaign purchased 48 various products and sent them, unopened to an independent laboratory for testing.

The results are nothing less than frightening.

A large number of products were contaminated with the carcinogenic chemicals formaldehyde and 1,4- dioxane. Included in the report was the iconic Johnson's Baby shampoo. This product was found to contain210 parts per million (ppm) formaldehyde and 1.1 ppm 1, 4-dioxane. In a written statement, Johnson & Johnson did not dispute that trace levels of these chemicals could be present as a result of production methods. They went on to say that these levels were so small as to cause no health concerns.....

How small is small enough?

We are talking about babies here! Their immune systems are still developing! These products are often used daily and if you care to add the other preparations used on a baby, there is a distinct possibility of a toxic overload. Small exposures add up! Here in Australia, the Department of Health and Aging was quoted as saying that they "were aware of the concerns raised by the report, but the low levels of formaldehyde and 1,4- dioxane were well under the safe permissible levels"

What is a "safe permissible level"?

Manufactures can easily remove the toxic by-products 1, 4-dioxane. They are not required to do so.

The FDA in the US have been lobbying cosmetic companies since 1982 as the contaminants can be "removed without reasonable cost" A quote from the Cosmetics Ingredients Review board (CIR) the self governing industry board stated they "were aware of the problem and were making efforts" In 2002 the FDA stressed that there was "evidence linking it to systemic cancer" Still in 2003 noted CIR "... the importance of purification procedures were stressed"

Commonly found preservatives in personal care products release formaldehyde, over time in the bottles or containers they are packaged in.

Baby Oil was another gift given to the pregnant women. This oil is 100% mineral oil. From the petro-chemical industry, there is nothing of benefit in this product. On the contrary, mineral oil coats the skin like plastic wrap. The skin cannot breathe or eliminate toxins. So, a baby, exposed to a toxin, cannot eliminate it if they have been smeared with baby oil!

The answer to the question.... of course Oprah would have had reservations endorsing anything or products that could potentially harm anyone, let alone a baby!

Can Homemade Acne Remedies Really Work? 3 More Quick and Easy Remedies to Fight Acne - Part 2

This article is part 2 of a review of homemade acne remedies. Be sure to test any new treatments on small patches of skin first to make sure your acne is not aggravated. While this article will explore natural remedies to treat pimples and mild forms of acne, it's important to note that with severe cases of acne, it's advisable to seek help from a medical professional.

1. Herbal Face Packs

Fenugreek leaves - This herb is great for preventing acne breakouts. To prepare the facepack, crush the leaves and make a paste out of them. Apply to infected areas at night and rinse the following morning with warm water.

Fresh aloe vera juice - this amazing plant can be very effective for treating acne scars and to heal and prevent pimples. Apply aloe vera juice to skin twice daily for at least 5 minutes. If you live in a climate where you have access to fresh aloe vera leaves, here is how to prepare fresh juice: peel the skin and put the flesh in a blender to puree it. This puree will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. But be sure to remove it from the fridge about an hour before using it.

2. Face Packs Made with Fruits and Veggies

Cucumbers and tomatoes contain nutrients to nourish your skin. Cucumber helps tighten and tone pores, while tomatoes are very high in antioxidants. To prepare a face pack, either blend cucumbers and tomatoes and apply to infected skin or just place the sliced veggies on the skin. If you are allergic to tomatoes, do not use on skin.

Honey Mask - Honey has anti-bacterial qualities. When applied to skin, it is very effective at killing surface bacteria. Apply a honey mask once or twice weekly depending on the results you are getting.

Citric fruit juices, such as lemon juice, can be used to remove dead skin cells to prevent clogging of pores. Allow the juice to dry on the face for about 10 minutes, then rinse with cool water.

3. Steam For Acne

Using steam can be effective for removing acne. In this simple treatment, you'll need a bowl of hot water and a large cloth. Two very important precautions to point out: first, do not use boiling water. Instead, use hot water from the tap, and secondly, do not use plastic to cover your head as you risk suffocation.

Fill the bowl with hot water and place your face over the bowl. Place the cloth over your head to hold in the steam. Stay under the cloth for about 10 minutes. Then use an astringent to clean and wipe off any oils that have been drawn out by the steam. Cold water can act as an astringent. Other astringents are witch hazel or apple cider vinegar. But be sure to test these first on a small area to check for allergies. You can also try adding one or all of these herbs to the steam water: red clover, lavender, and strawberry leaves.

For your first time, only stay for 5 minutes under the cloth in order to check for any adverse reaction. Those with very sensitive skin may have a bad reaction to the steam, especially if the water was to hot. If you're not sure about your skin's sensitivity, be sure to check with your doctor or dermatologist first.

Try these natural acne remedies and see which one gives you the best results. Remember to also include in your acne care program a balanced diet, regular cleansing, and other treatments suggested by your health care professional.

Fashion - History's Bread Trail

Just as the rings of a tree tell its age, fashion acts as that ring. Immediately seeing a particular style of fashion, you can, with most certainty, tell its age. Clothing has the ability to be an excellent indicator of time. When you turn on an episode of say, COPS, by examining the clothing and hairstyles you can almost immediately decipher the decade. The same can be said for when one is watching say a movie preview, is it a period piece? What era? All you need to do is look at the clothing and think back to your middle-school history class. Let us not forget to mention what intense and indelible effect clothing has on culture and society. The first thing we see has a tendency to say a lot about who we are as people, as well as a society as a whole. In the beginning clothing was about protection and heat regulation. There are so many theories as to why homo-sapiens (man) began to loose the hair covering their bodies. Perhaps no one wanted lice living on them and eating them alive. Whatever the reason, the shift has shaped culture, questioning what may be acceptable and challenging that which is not acceptable, in addition to its primary purpose of shelter for the body.

Marie Antoinette, a woman famous for her fashion sense and ability to create trends, indulged her passion for fashion. While prominent heads of state lived off the yearly wage of 50,000 livres, Antoinette spend double that, around 100,000 livres on her wardrobe alone every year. Although well known for her high style, she kept some of her more extravagant spending a secret from the King. Antoinette not only set trends and presented new ways to express oneself through fashion it may have been a secondary function to her spending. Antoinette was unable to bear children, frustrated and childless, she kept tails waging with her wild wigs and costuming, diverting attention from the fact that she could not produce an heir.

The period of 1911 to around 1925 saw a lot of change in the way of women's rights as well as women's hemlines. The social upheaval that occurred as a result of World War I created a shift in the economy, which also created a shift in society's role for women. As men went off to war, women were left behind to rear the children, tend the home, and now more than ever bring home the bacon. After the war, the Age of Jazz was ushered in, an era when prohibition looms large and styles changed dramatically, creating quite the controversy in the streets. In 1910 the hemlines were ankle-length; in 1919 they hiked up to the mid-calf and finally by 1925 hemlines were all the way up to the knee. In the span of 15 years, men and women were exposed to more feminine flesh than previously experienced in history. As women fought for their rights, they also questioned what society told them to wear and how to dress. If they had to take on both role of mother and father, they had better wear whatever makes them feel good.

Since its conception, the movie industry wanted to uphold the values and morals of the time. In 1922 the industry created the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), headed by the former postmaster Will H. Hays. Later nicknamed the "Hays Office," was all about upholding the standards of society, which decent people valued, e.g., regulating what was acceptable to be seen in regards to violence, sex, hemlines and necklines. For a while it was a great self-governing system solution for the motion picture industry, though in the 1940s with WWII, saw a weakening in its governing strength. Independent movie producers like Howard Hughes created films such as "The Outlaw," a 1943 western, starring Jane Russell that chipped away at the compliance of the board. Considered too sexual and provocative, Hughes cut many scenes, raised necklines, and later was granted a seal approval from the "Hayes Office," but disgruntled by all the editing, Hughes shelved the project until 1946. In 1946 Hughes, in a strong act of defiance, released his film without any edits and experienced widespread mainstream success despite the board's obvious disapproval. Finally, in the 1950s the board was disbanded and the ratings system we now have in place started to come to fruition.

During and after the sexual revolution, society saw severe shifts in the styles seen in the streets. Though in the beginning of the 1960s only the hippies were wearing and doing radical practices. As the decade went on, it was more about a self-made expression of social defiance. Hippies wore less clothing, louder styles and even created garments of their own design as an answer to war, hate, ignorance and the values of regimented society. The clothing embraced by the hippie community reflected influences of eastern philosophy, psychedelic rock music, drug experimentation and all other forms of alternative consciousness. It shocked suburbia and shifted the acceptable standards of dress, no longer would women have to leave the house with set hair, a full face of makeup, gloves a coat and of course a hat. After the 1960s women and men have enjoyed much more freedom of expression in personal style. Maybe we were all just happy that some people put their clothes back on, no matter what those clothes might be.

The 1990s were another decade enjoying a new sense of identity, courtesy of the fashion world. Widespread economic productivity, a new way to communicate via the internet and a clear shift in gender roles in industrialized countries worldwide all lent to fashion's mainstream appeal. Instead of actors and actresses on our magazine covers, it was the faces of Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Stephanie Seymour, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington. High fashion's heavy influence during this decade was certainly a bi-product of increased economic productivity. We started to watch runway shows on cable every Saturday morning, we wanted models in our gossip mags, and we defiantly needed their wardrobes. These big supermodels crossed all mainstream borders, appearing on the runways, as contract faces for the major labels, on TV and even in film. If not for these major crossovers, where would we be today? We would be without our Cameron Diaz' and Charlize Theron', both former models who have crossed the lines and influenced what we want to emulate in fashion.

Fashion is a force to follow, fueling the frenzy of civilization, questioning standards and crossing borders, acting as a permanent marker of what culture values and considers new or acceptable, feeding our dreams, fantasies, fears, and beliefs, and creating a piece of time to teach and test the ages.

Meaningful Beauty by Cindy Crawford - Pros & Cons

Meaningful Beauty is touted as the latest in skin care products by super model Cindy Crawford. This product was created more than 10 years ago by founder Doctor Sebagh and Cindy. However the line of products was inspired by her and she specifically sought out the doctor for his program on skin maintenance. This was after she had seen changes in complexion Cindy was on board to sponsor the products. It took many years for the actual line to launch due to testing regulations.

The product contains an anti oxidant that is supposed to come from a rare french melon. This is called superoxide dismutase. The company advertises that this oxide, prevents free radicals from being released in your skin because of the enzyme of the melon. It also contains the enzyme, Coenzyme Q10, which they say activates skin rejuvenation in their products.

The advantages of Meaningful Beauty are that there is a notable story, being how the product was formed, especially with the support of Cindy behind the line. There is also a focus on the anti aging benefits within the products which is what attracted Cindy to the line, initially. The product is also easily available online for purchase from a lot of retailers.

As far as the disadvantages are concerned, firstly there is no detailed information on the formula used in the products. Furthermore, there is need for more studies to back up the claims they make in their advertising. There is still inconclusive evidence as to how much the oxidant from the French melon, will really make a difference in fine lines and wrinkles to prevent the aging appearance.

Thomas Nagel And His Article On Death

Thomas Nagel begins his collection of essays with a most intriguing discussion about death. Death being one of the most obviously important subjects of contemplation, Nagel takes an interesting approach as he tries to define the truth as to whether death is, or is not, a harm for that individual. Nagel does a brilliant job in attacking this issue from all sides and viewpoints, and it only makes sense that he does it this way in order to make his own observations more credible.

He begins by looking at the very common views of death that are held by most people in the world, and tells us that he will talk of death as the "unequivocal and permanent end to our existence" and look directly at the nature of death itself (1). The first view that Nagel decides to discuss is the view that death is bad for us because it deprives us of more life. Most people are in the view that life is good; even though some experiences in life can be bad, and sometimes tragic, the nature of life itself is a very positive state. Nagel also adds that when the experiences of life are put aside, this state is still positive, and not simply "neutral" (2).

Nagel goes further to point out some important observations about the value of life. Mere "organic survival" cannot be said to be a component of value (2). Nagel gives the example of death and being in a coma before dying. Both of these situations would be equally bad situations. Another observation is that "like most goods" the value can become greater with time (2).

Looking now at what is bad about death instead of what is good about life, Nagel presents some obvious thoughts regarding this point. Life is good because we have the conscious ability to experience and appreciate all that life has to offer. So death is bad because it deprives us of these experiences, not because the actual state of death is bad for us.

The next point that Nagel makes is that there are certain indications that show how people do not object to death simply because it "involves long periods of nonexistence" (3). It is said that people would not look at the temporary "suspension" of life as a terrible misfortune, because the fact that it is temporary tells us that this will ultimately bring the state back to that of conscious life. Also, we do not look at the state being before we are born as a misfortune, or deprivation of life, because that life has not yet begun and, (as Nagel states later), he refutes the possible argument that the person could have been born earlier and had more life, with the fact that if that person was born substantially earlier, he would cease to be that person, but instead someone else entirely.

Nagel discusses next three problems. The first is a view that there are no evils that are not rooted in a person consciously "minding" those evils. Nagel puts this view in to easier terms by saying that this is the same as saying "what you don't know can't hurt you" (4). There are several examples that can illustrate this theory. People who think this way would say that it is not a harm for a person to be ridiculed behind his back, if he doesn't know about it. If he doesn't experience the evil, it is not bad for him. Nagel thinks this view is wrong. The natural discovery here is that it is bad to be betrayed, this is what makes the whole situation unfortunate; not because the discovery of this betrayal makes us unhappy.

The second problem is that which has to do with who the subject of harm caused by death is, and when exactly this occurs. Harm can be experienced by a person before death, nothing can be experienced after death, so when is death itself experienced as a harm? The third problem deals with posthumous and prenatal existence.

Contemplating the good or bad aspects of death, Nagel observes that we must look at the possible circumstances surrounding a death, and the pertinent history of the person who dies. This is important because we miss a lot that is important to the argument if what we take into consideration is exclusively the state of the person at the moment of death. Nagel gives an example of a very intelligent man sustaining an injury that causes him to regress to the mental capacity of an infant. His needs can be fulfilled like those of an infant and be kept happy as long as simple needs are met. His family and friends would look at this as a terrible misfortune, even though the man himself is not aware of his loss. This situation is unfortunate because of the deprivation of what might have been had he not been injured in this way. He could have gone on to accomplish great things for the world and his family, and live out his life through old age as an accomplished and acclaimed individual. This would have lead him to great happiness, but it can be observed that this same man in a state of mental capacity to match that of a child is also happy, but Nagel agrees that what happened to this man is a tragedy because of the terrible loss of the life the intelligent man could have led. This situation can relate to death in this way of thinking about deprivation. Death is bad because it robs you of what could have been.

After making these observations, Nagel states that "This case should convince us that it is arbitrary to restrict the goods and evils that can befall a man to non-relational properties ascribable to him at particular times" (6). There are endless circumstances and happenings going on that affect a person's fortune or misfortune. Many of these never coincide directly to the person's life. We must consider that there is no way to pinpoint the exact position of a misfortune in a person's life, nor a way to define the origin. People have dreams and goals in life that may or may not be fulfilled. There is no way to find all of the circumstances and possibilities that go into whether or not these hopes and dreams are eventually fulfilled, but Nagel tells us that we must simply accept that "If death is an evil, it must be accounted for in these terms, and the impossibility of locating it within life should not trouble us" (7).

There are some who view the time before birth and the time after death as the same. We exist in neither, though Nagel argues that there is a difference. This whole essay has expressed exactly his view that though we do not exist in either case, death deprives us of time that we could have been living our lives.

Nagel makes an interesting observation about whether we can assign as a misfortune an event or aspect of life which is normal to all humans in general. We all know that we all will die and that the maximum amount of life is somewhere around 100 years. So is it still plausible to say this is a misfortune? He also gives the example of moles, which are blind. It is not a misfortune for a mole to be blind because they are all blind, and they will never know sight and be able to appreciate it. But Nagel also presents the example of a situation in which everyone goes through six months of pain and anguish before dying. Everyone knows that this is going to happen, but does that make the event any less of an event to dread and fear?

We are brought into this world and brought up with aspects of our lives that we appreciate. The deprivation of these things that we learn to appreciate is a misfortune, because we have learned to live with these privileges. It is unfathomable for a human being to grasp the concept of a finite life, in the truest meaning of understanding. We do not think of our lives right now as a set out plan or a finite sequence of events. We do not live day to day thinking of what we should do according to how much time we have left. Our lives are essentially an open-ended sequence of good and bad circumstances and possibilities. Death is the abrupt interruption of this sequence that we cannot help but be in the mindset will never end. This is how death is a deprivation, and ultimately, a bad thing for a person.

In conclusion, Nagel offers a good argument in his essay on death about death itself being a harm. Whether a person believes in the immortal life or not, it must still be considered that dying deprives you of the goods and experiences of life. This view seems unavoidable. A person who dies at age 92 has lived a full life to the best of his ability and has experienced more than someone who dies at age 32. The person dying at age 32 had many things that he wished to accomplish and experience in his life, and since the event of death has taken away all possibility of any of these goals coming to pass, and undermines all the work that he has put forth up to that point in pursuit of his goals, death is a terrible tragedy for him.

LaJolla - The Beverly Hills of San Diego

La Jolla is the definition of "enchanting seaside village." With great weather, swaying palm trees and spectacular ocean views, it's just like a trip to Hawaii.

This was decades ago and we had just returned from our first real long-distance travel experience - an unforgettable, eye-opening journey to Hawaii that exposed a couple of soggy Pacific Northwest college students to bright sunshine and warm saltwater that we never even knew existed. The very next month we were taking a Southern California vacation when we came upon La Jolla and it was, as Yogi would say, déjá vu all over again.

To be sure, the water in Southern California was prettier than it was warm. And there weren't too many native Hawaiians - although Hawaii doesn't seem to have many either. WHAT La Jolla did have was the views and that bright sunshine, and we were determined that someday we would come back and live there.

We did eventually live and work there, if only for a brief time, and this special coastal haven delivered on all its promises. The "Village," as the locals call Girard Avenue and the community surrounding it, is a gourmet blend of those spices that make life so enjoyable - fine dining, world-class shopping, countless outdoor activities, surf, sand, incredible views and, of course, almost-constant sunshine.

Nowadays, the local home values have priced out the average mortal and, if you're living there, you've either done very well for yourself or had the good fortune to grow up in a family that bought local real estate back when local land prices were reasonable - probably sometime just after statehood. But there are two groups of people who are living in the Village temporarily: the renters and the tourists. The renters plunk down several thousand each month for the barest of digs; the tourists stay only briefly but much more economically.

Which is why it's great to be a tourist in La Jolla. With a choice of several tasteful hotels and spa resorts - and, yes, some are quite reasonably priced - visitors can pretend they're living the lifestyle for a few days and still go home with money in their pockets.

It all begins with watching the people parade down on Gerard Avenue. Plan to have a gourmet sandwich down at one of several cafes and then plop yourself at an outside table. Leading the parade is a 20-something bombshell dressed in a spaghetti-strapped halter and capris, dragging along a five-inch poodle that is decidedly disinterested in being part of this parade. Next up: a 30-something clean-cut guy wearing lumberjack boots up to his ankles, his pants squished into the boot tops, and his long-sleeve shirt well down over his belt buckle. It must be new La Jolla fashion because his stylish 20-something model-like girlfriend doesn't seem the least bit embarrassed to walk beside him. Then along comes two 30-something men, dressed almost identically in turtlenecks, expensive sports jackets and shades, surely sweltering in the mid-day sun but cool in their own minds. And on it goes all during lunch, making it almost worth the nine bucks it cost for the sandwich.

You might even see celebrities in this neck of the woods. We came upon Geena Davis and her kids one time, while beautiful people such as Cindy Crawford have actually bought houses in the Village. Barbra Streisand is said to have bought her wedding ring down at Bowers Jewelers. Movie and TV filming are common and the longtime series Silk Stalkings used the local scenery quite often to depict the glitzy glamour of Southern California.

Walk down Gerard just a little ways and there seems to be plenty of temptation to bring out your credit card. There are specialty stores like Rangoni shoes, art galleries like Cosmopolitan Fine Art and Images of Nature, and then more typical "mall" stores like Banana Republic and the Gap. Side streets have their own offerings, many of them related to health, fitness and well-being - even if you need a little plastic surgery to be well.

Gerard is one of two main streets in the Village. Also famous for its shopping is Prospect Avenue which also has lots of trendy boutiques and popular eateries. Check out George's for spectacular views of the ocean and award-winning cuisine. Brockton Villa's another one just off Prospect that seems a perennial favorite. A Caesar salad on the outdoor deck at Moondoggie's can be a refreshing and relatively inexpensive pause as the breezes from the shoreline find their way to this part of the shopping district. Just footsteps from Scripps Park are such outdoor cafes as Cody's, the French Side of the West and Fay's Gourmet Seafood.

Scripps Park is, in fact, just a block down from the main shopping district, and yet is anything but commercial. You might find an ecology tee-shirt stand but mostly it's green lawn and meandering walkways that entice friends, lovers and families to stroll along one of the most picturesque shorelines in all of California. The shoreline is jagged and rocky in places while at the same time offering up just enough beach to lay out your beach towels in some privacy. Stroll about 10 minutes south and you'll find La Jolla Cove where you can watch the local seals sun themselves on a scenic beach.

Skirting the east edge of Scripps Park is a scenic roadway that is often used as a bike route between La Jolla and the more touristy beach town of Pacific Beach. The ride takes you through beautiful neighborhoods - never far away from ocean views - and through the fascinating town of Birdrock. It, too, is artsy and trendy but maybe down a notch in price.

La Jolla Shores is just north of the downtown area and offers a mile-long beach where locals and tourists alike congregate for outdoor activities. Nearby are the expensive homes of the La Jolla Shores area as well as a few hotels and a tiny shopping district.

Nearby is a marine preserve so it's common to see divers preparing for their scuba sessions out in the deep. If you don't scuba, you'll find other ways to get close to the ocean such as paddling a kayak in an area near what is known as the La Jolla Caves. Or you can actually climb down in the caves by visiting the La Jolla Cave and Shell Shop, where there is a 145-step walkway to the Sunny Jim Cave, the largest of these grottoes.

Another seaside favorite is the Birch Aquarium, a popular place to take families for an up-close look at sea life such as coral reefs, tide pools and even sharks. The Aquarium has a 70,000-gallon tank in which many sea creatures are on display.

If you simply want to drive around the area, the spectacular homes make it worthwhile. One especially rewarding drive is to head up Nautilus Street to the highest elevations in town where the Mt. Soledad Memorial Cross is dedicated to veterans of the two world wars and the Korean War. While there has been a political tug-of-war about whether the cross will remain, the views from this part of La Jolla offer one of the best ways to see the topography of the entire San Diego area.

AT A GLANCE

South African Stokvel - Creating A Trustworthy Environment For Saving Money

"Stock fairs" had it's being in the Eastern Cape in the early 19th century.

What started as a simple savings solution has today grown into a fascinating range of stokvels for every possible need in life, ranging from joyous occasions such as the Christmas stokvel (saving for a generous December food shopping spree), to a hybrid of the stokvel, which lends financial and social support to families.

A Stokvel is group savings scheme, where members contribute a fixed amount of money to a common pool monthly. Money is drawn either in rotation or when a particular need or occasion arises.

A stokvel is a group of friends who contribute an amount each month, say R 500.00. In a stokvel of 12 friends, each person gets one chance a year to take home the month's collected cash. So once a year each person in the group gets a lump sum of, in this case, R6 000.00.

Stokvels:
Making Social Cents? - complexities of the cultural, social and financial interface of this thriving industry.

Stokvel is not necessarily limited to only poor or rural South Africans. In fact, executives in urban areas belong to highly sophisticated stokvels that generate significant income.

The total amount invested in stokvels annually by this sector is estimated to be R1.3-billion.

"In this 'ubuntu society' people look after each other's needs and share resources. Trust is the other side of the ubuntu coin, which is probably best translated as a common humanity,".

Stokvel is a savings scheme by group of people who save a regular amount each month, a stokvel will enabled you to amass wealth while avoiding the debt trap. Banks charge high fees and high interest rates, but stokvels have none of these disadvantages.

Urban legend has it that stokvels are so addictive that members sometimes save enormous amounts relative to their earnings.

Stokvels is a "traditional" investment vehicles.
Born from a need to create a trustworthy environment for saving, the stokvel has gone beyond the role of simply "making life easier".

Stokvels are about economic empowerment, enabling enterprises to flourish; it's about job creation and about developing closer relationships.

"Although Stokvels are regarded as somewhat traditional and some would say outdated social structures.

Research study into Stokvels examines this financially significant South African phenomenon. Why should we be interested in Stokvels? Estimates are that the total investment in Stokvels and Burial Societies in South Africa reach the R1.3 billion mark.

Stokvels are not just the domain of a few - very few industries are not "touched" by stokvels - directly or indirectly. Stokvels are all about group affinity and networking - the group rather than to an individual. They provide a powerful and cost effective distribution network which yield great influence and spending clout.

Many of the strong leaders in stokvels are highly regarded and respected leaders in their community. The brands or corporations they endorse are therefore more likely to be embraced by their community.

Reasons for belonging to a Stokvel:

There are many and varied reasons for belonging to a Stokvel, ranging from a strong form of social collateral which satisfies social needs, to a form of self-discipline and commitment which enables people to have a lump sum to use for a specific purpose or to grow their money.

Many stokvels members emphasise the importance of the social prestige of belonging to a stokvel (members are invited to join one - they cannot just go and join up) and the fact that this membership reflected common values and good understanding.

Understanding the communities these informal schemes operate in:

The communities in which Stokvels operate are dynamic - there is a strong sense of Ubuntu. Poverty and apartheid have weakened the social fabric of many poorer communities and there is a strong sense of a need to pull together and create solutions.

Savings instruments for the poor tend to be time and event bound and this influences their capacity to save and invest in the future. There is a common misconception that the poor do not save, however they need to accumulate large lump sums of money for a variety of reasons, such as:

School fees Feasts (celebrations such as weddings, coming of age and funerals) Specific item (usually furniture or appliance) Monthly cash flow is not enough to purchase these items without savings. What is important to note, however is that the poor DO SAVE, but in a very different manner. It would appear that their saving is Connected to a specific time Purpose or event driven With specific intent.

Consequently, this leaves them vulnerable to unplanned occurrences and events. It is important to realize the extent to which the poor have very complex financial lives - sustaining survivalist business and entrepreneurial business are not easy. For many households juggling their grants and the demands of many family members on a small budget is a challenging and complicated process.

Stokvels and other informal financial instruments are readily accessible, well understood and appropriate. Stokvels rely on

(a) the principle of reciprocity and

(b) mutual trust for sustainability If you get the support of one member, you have the support of all, BUT the converse is also true:

Stokvels:
Enjoy proximity to their clients Have personal relationships with their clients, therefore detailed and intimate information about their clients Maintain good speed in transacting business. Are more cost effective in financial intermediation - in mobilising and deploying funds.

A critical part of this success is the breaking of a cycle of vulnerability and poverty which leaves people literally living from hand to mouth.

Stokvel Savings represents security and creates a chance to dream.

"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today." - James Dean

JAMES BYRON DEAN

James Dean was born on February 8th, 1931 in Marion, Indiana. His hobbies were writing, painting, bullfighting (when did that happen?), photography, sculpting, car racing, horse racing and playing the bongos. His favorite drink was coffee and his favorite ice cream flavor was coffee and raspberry.

LIFE IMITATES ART

"To grasp the full significance of life is the actor's duty; to interpret it his problem; and to express it his dedication. Being an actor is the loneliest thing in the world. You are all alone with your concentration and imagination, and that's all you have. Being a good actor isn't easy. Being a man is even harder. I want to be both before I'm done."

GENERATION NEXT

James Dean's first professional acting gig was a Pepsi commercial. Since then, Michael Jackson, Cindy Crawford, Michael J. Fox, Shaquille O'Neal, Jeff Gordon, Ray Charles, Billy Crystal, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Shakira, The Osbournes, Faith Hill, Sammy Sosa, Joe Montana, Ken Griffey Jr., Gloria Estafan, Tina Turner and many others have endorsed the blue canned beverage.

BRAD'S CHOICE

Before Pepsi was called Pepsi, it was called "Brad's Drink" way back in 1898. Well, another Brad, Brad Pitt is now vying for the chance to remake James Dean's first film, "East of Eden" with Pitt in the starring role. Dean's performance in "East of Eden" won him an Oscar nomination, making him one of only five actors to receive a nomination from their first screen performances. He was also the only actor in history to receive more than one Oscar nomination posthumously.

ANIMAL FARM

"Studying cows, pigs and chickens can help an actor develop his character. There are a lot of things I learned from animals. One was that they couldn't hiss or boo me. I also became close to nature, and am now able to appreciate the beauty with which this world is endowed."

FOUR EYES

Dean was required to wear glasses while driving as he was nearsighted. The king of cool, had to wear glasses, if only he had been around long enough to do a public service announcement for that, then being a "four-eyes" would have meant a completely different thing these days.

THESE GO TO ELEVEN

No matter what kind of music James Dean listened to, he liked it LOUD! But what did he listen to? After all it was the early 50's and Elvis had yet to become the King, the Beatles had yet to become the Fab Four...What did James Dean rock out to, before there was Rock? He liked African Tribal music, Afro-Cuban songs and dance (Dean liked to play the bongos), Classical music - especially Bartok and Stravinsky, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday.

THE ACTOR WAY

"When an actor plays a scene exactly the way a director orders, it isn't acting. It's following instructions. Anyone with the physical qualifications can do that. So the director's task is just that ñ to direct, to point the way. Then the actor takes over. And he must be allowed the space, the freedom to express himself in the role. Without that space, an actor is no more than an unthinking robot with a chest-full of push-buttons."

FRANK, BILLIE AND JIMMY

It has been said that James Dean's favorite song was Billie Holiday's "When Your Lover Has Gone" and his favorite album was Frank Sinatra's "Songs for Young Lovers".

ACTING THE PART

"An actor must interpret life, and in order to do so must be willing to accept all the experiences life has to offer. In fact, he must seek out more of life than life puts at his feet. In the short span of his lifetime, an actor must learn all there is to know, experience all there is to experience, or approach that state as closely as possible. He must be superhuman in his efforts to store away in the core of his subconscious everything that he might be called upon to use in the expression of his art."

DEAD MAN'S CURVE

Dean only made three Hollywood pictures, propelling him into super stardom. As his final film, Giant, was wrapping up in Marfa, Texas, Dean was driving his Porsche Spyder to an auto race in Salinas, California. His car collided with another can outside Cholame, California. James Dean, an American legend, died on September 30th, 1955. The Failure Analysis Associates later re-created all the details of the accident at the same approximate time on September 30th, and concluded that James Dean was traveling 55 to 56 m.p.h. when the fateful accident occurred, thereby proving he had not been speeding, despite the fact that he had received a speeding ticket only two hours before the crash.

APOCALYPSE NOW

"Jim Dean and Elvis were the spokesmen for an entire generation. When I was in acting school in New York, years ago, there was a saying that if Marlon Brando changed the way people acted, then James Dean changed the way people lived. He was the greatest actor who ever lived. He was simply a genius." - Martin Sheen

GIANT

"Every time I go to Europe, I remember that James Dean never saw Europe, but yet I see his face everywhere. There ís James Dean, Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe windows of the Champs Elysees, discos in the south of Spain, restaurants in Sweden, t-shirts in Moscow. My life was confused and disoriented for years by his passing. My sense of destiny destroyed the great films he would have directed, the great performances he would have given, the great humanitarian he would have become, and yet, he is the greatest actor and star I have ever known." - Dennis Hopper

South African Scuba Dive - Great White Shark Cage Diving

There are two areas where Great White diving is done, Gansbaai and Mosselbaai. Both these destinations can be reached with a scenery drive from Cape Town International Airport. Below is some information on these areas and Great White Cage diving. Also some information on other diving sites.

Daily shark diving/sighting tours (weather permitting) are done off Gansbaai, a mere stone-throw away from the most southern tip of the African Continent. Approx. 12km offshore from Gansbaai (2hrs drive from Cape Town) there are two islands situated next to each other. Due to a number of geographical reasons - one being the shallow and narrow channel that runs between these two islands - Dyer Island has become known as one of only two unique areas in the world, where the chances to view the great white shark, rises exceptionally high. Other wildlife species such as Cape Fur Seals, Cape Gannets, Cape Cormorants, Jackass penguins, whales and dolphins are also likely to be sighted.

Gansbaai is little holiday and fishing village situated a 160km from Cape Town. The area has several attractions for the nature lover with whale watching being the most popular. Accommodation may be taken close by at a very nice chalets with small harbour and sea views offering excellent meals. The shark dives are launched from the neighboring Kleinbaai. Cage diving is strictly regulated by the authorities and conducted in an ethical way in accordance with international standards. It is bsolutely safe and you need not have any diving experience at all, only a short course on safety and the use of the equipment.

On a typical day we meet the skipper early in the morning and then head out about 9 am and return about 3 pm - depending on the conditions, wind direction and currents you proceed to one of numerous holes, put down anchor and set out the bait. Only bait that forms part of the animal's natural diet is used.

We then wait for the Great Whites to find us. This can take anything from minutes to several hours. In the meantime every one is briefed on the procedures, and the cage is put into the water. The cage is securely attached to a platform on the back of the boat and the top of the cage floats about 23cm above the water. It is constructed of steel bars and is closed off at the top by means of a gate.

Once the first shark is spotted the bait lines are drawn in towards the boat so that everybody has the opportunity to view and admire this magnificent predator. The first cage renters the water and the lines are drawn slowly towards the cage to lure the shark. This is an emotional and heart stopping experience.

It must be remembered that these are wild animals, and no guarantees can be given that they will be sighted on a particular day. It is therefore advisable to budget for at least two consecutive days diving. Statistics kept of sightings over the last five years in Mosselbaai help to pick the best possible time of the year being April to July and September to November. In late Aug and early September 2004 there is a lot of shark activity, they are seeing 9 - 15 sharks a day.

In Gansbaai the best time of the year is in our winter season (April - September), when the sharks are particularly active in their feeding patterns (80-99%). Even though you still have a chance of seeing the sharks during the other months (October - February), their feeding patterns are different and they tend to have inconsistent feeding behaviour by feeding actively the one day and less active on other day's. However, due to breeding season amongst the seals on Dyer Island during the months November to January natural feeding predations are often seen in the area. Sighting rate in the low season is approx. 60%.

How To Make Stunning T-Shirts With Iron On Transfers

Do you want to have a highly customized t-shirt design? One of the easiest and best ways to do this is with iron on transfers because with the right kind of design, you are in complete control of the final output of your mini project for your shirt. And it is not really a hard thing to do.

The first thing that you should finalize is the kind of design that you would like to have on your t-shirt. While there are many decals out there that look like plain stickers that you iron on to your clothing, the problem with this is that the design is already done. There is not much customization that you can do with it, as opposed to having your own design made from scratch.

One of the best that you can try is using rhinestone and Swarovski crystal motifs. These are like little crystals or beads that you can place one after another on your t-shirt and create your own unique design. You can spell out your name or create an outline of a drawing. In short, the possibilities are endless.

So how can you have your own amazing iron on transfers for your t-shirts? The most common ways and practical ones include the following:

You can use a computer software to help you with your design.

If you know Photoshop, CorelDraw or any other design and graphics software then you can easily create your own template or design where you can base your crystal designs on. But the problem with this is that you need to know how to operate such a computer program. So if you are not that technically advanced then you may want to look at other options.

Get your design and your t-shirt online.

There are online services that can do the iron on transfer design for you as well as getting it printed or transferred to a t-shirt. You do not have to send them your t-shirt because you can simply choose from their inventory. You can also select the font of your design, the artwork that you want or you can send them your own design and they will make the transfer for you. It is perhaps one of the easiest ways to do it.

While these two mentioned here can get you great customized shirts, you may also want to do a more hands on approach to it especially if you are more of an artist at hand. Here are some tips that you may want to keep in mind to make your customization a success.

The iron must be really hot.

Most packaged iron on transfer designs will note in their instructions that you need a hot iron. And when they state hot, they really mean hot. Keep that in mind otherwise you will not get good results from it.

Always print a preview.

To help you save from ruining a costly transfer paper, print your design first on a regular paper. This way you will see first if the design was done correctly and that you will know it will be printed with less chances of errors.

Use a hard surface for ironing.

Ironing boards may do the job but not as ideally as hard surfaces like formica or wooden boards. The reason a hard surface is necessary is because it holds the heat better and longer than ironing boards. This is important during the ironing of your design to your t-shirt.

Hopefully, these tips and suggestions will help you succeed in making some really good iron on transfers on your t-shirts. You can make this a hobby or eventually, when you are really good at this, you can even start a business based on it.

Gospel Singer Beverly Crawford Career Profile

Effervescent gospel vocalist and ordained evangelist, Evangelist Beverly Crawford, was born in the early sixties in Gainesville, Florida. One of seven children in a household headed by her pastor father, Walter Camp. The young Beverly became exposed to gospel music from the earliest time she could remember. Like many other gospel divas, she began singing at a very age, making her debut at the tender age of three, at her father's church. Raised in Gainesville, the young Beverly joined her four sisters by singing at their father's church. By this time music was already in her blood and the young Beverly was already rehearsing future performances: years later she recalled with mild amusement how she would often sing as a young child in front of her father's house, with a stick as a microphone; and the grass as her audience!!

The young Beverly began performing her four sisters in the family gospel group which became know as the Camp Sisters, and quickly gained popularity through Gainesville and surrounding areas of Florida.

After surviving cancer, in 1989 Beverly and her husband Todd Crawford founded the Potter's House Ministries, a development inspired by Beverly's renewed and unshakable faith in God and her passion to serve Him through ministering and music. Also that same year, Todd recorded a video of the Camp Sisters performing and sent copies to various gospel promoters and media organizations. Gospel legend Dr. Bobby Jones was suitable impressed by the recording. Jones, who hosts the Bobby Jones Gospel, a television programme hosted on the Black Entertainment Channel, invited Beverly and the other Camp Sisters group to his Sunday morning show. After several successful appearances, Beverly was invited by Bobby Jones to join his group, New Life.

Beverly performed with Bobby Jones and New Life for six successful years. She featured on recordings
Bring It to Jesus and the Music City Mass Choir's We Need to Hear It From You, before launching out on a solo career.

Beverly's solo career began with the release of her first debut album Jesus, Precious King in 1995 under the Warner Bros label. This was followed three years later in 1998 by her second album release, Now That I'm Here. Precious King brought Crawford a Stellar Award nomination and Now That I'm Here brought her recognition with a Grammy Award nomination in 1999.

Crawford released a studio album Beverly, in 2001 on T.D Jake's Dexterity Records platform; a vibrant production featuring eleven tracks brilliantly blended from elements of traditional gospel, pop, jazz and funk. Crawford continues to manage a hectic touring schedule which includes an incredible 200 concerts each year, inspired by her passion and devotion to the ministry.

Beverly and her husband Todd have two children. Their daughter Latrina also featured in her mother's 2003 album Live Family and Friends, which also featured Shirley Murdock, Bobby Jones and Melvin Williams.

Beverly Crawford is a living embodiment of the endless possibilities that can be attained, based on an unshakable faith in God and total devotion to serve Him through ministering and through song.
