Advance Patrol - Min dag

The Art of the Infomercial

If you've been channel surfing at just about any time of the day, you more than likely will have caught a current TV infomercial. You may have even found yourself sticking around to watch the show just to see what they were talking about. It's amazing how well these new forms of marketing do in terms of selling products. Infomercials are basically lengthier commercials used to advertised various products. These days you will see infomercial ads pitching everything from anti-aging skin care products to fitness workout equipment to ways to make money faster than you ever imagined. These long format commercials make big claims and promises backed by special guests, customer testimonials and even celebrities. In fact most infomercials these days are hosted by celebrities, who use their name to lend credibility to the product(s) being sold.

Infomercials on TV are largely successful as they present more information about a product than the average commercial does. It allows the consumer or potential buyer to learn more about the item before they make a decision to buy. The traditional infomercial has included a studio audience who "oohs" and "ahhs" over the various product and its results, while a celebrity or other host talks up the product. Some of the more famous entrepreneurs to gain fame from their infomercials are Kevin Trudeau who sells various books and audio programs, and Tony Little, maker of the Gazelle Edge elliptical machine and other infomercial products. Some notable celebrities associated with infomercials these days are Chuck Norris, Cindy Crawford, Mr. T, Susan Lucci and Victoria Principal. Their star power is often used to reflect that the product is credible and worth buying. Consumers feel more assured that the product is something they should pay for and pick up their phone to quickly order.

Buyers should always beware with infomercials making extravagant claims. Usually in fine print on the screen at some time are the words "Individual results will vary", or something to that effect. Also, some products or the companies selling them, will make other notes in fine print, where they lure a customer into signing up for an additional membership or service. The customer is clueless until their credit card bill arrives and they see the extra charges. Some consumer affair and customer complaint sites have also become flooded with negative comments about a product. Therefore, it's always best to do your research and figure out what you might be getting yourself into before you buy.

Treadmill Running Workout - Forty Five Minutes of Speed

If you're looking for a challenging, engaging treadmill running workout, we've got a great 45 minute fat blaster for you. It is based on a step ladder approach, where you add speed during select increments of the workout. Let's take a closer look...

This workout is based on speed work. The purpose of speed work is to help your body handle faster paces without deterioration of your running form. Over the 45 minutes, you will gradually build your speed, with a few recovery times built in.

If you're a runner, a good pace to start at is 4 mph. That's a 15 minute mile, so if you want to cover three miles during the workout, don't drop below 4 mph. In addition to speed, you can set a distance goal. If you go through this workout on a weekly basis, try to maintain or add to your distance each time.

Do this workout at a 1% incline to simulate outdoor running conditions.

Minutes 1-5: Warm up at your starting speed.

Minutes 5-12: Seven minutes at a reasonably challenging pace. Remember you'll be adding speed throughout the workout, so don't go too fast at first. A good rule of thumb is to increase your speed 1.0 to 1.5 from your warm up pace.

Minutes 12-14: Take two minutes of active recovery. That means a pace in between your warm up speed and the pace you just did.

Minutes 14-20: Six minutes at a speed. 5 mph higher than your previous speed work.

Minutes 20-22: Active recovery, same as above.

Minutes 22-27: Five minutes, increase speed. 5 mph. Notice how we are running faster, but for one minute less time?

Minutes 27-29: Two minutes active recovery.

Minutes 29-33: Four minutes, increase speed. 5 mph.

Minutes 33-35: Three minutes, increase speed. 5 mph.

Minutes 35-37: Two minutes active recovery.

Minutes 37-39: Two minutes, increase speed. 5 mph.

Minutes 39-41: One minute, go as fast as you can! Cover the maximum amount of distance.

Minutes 41-45: Cool down!

Let's suppose you started your first challenging pace, from minutes 5 to 7, at 5.5 mph. By the end, if you followed the workout, your speed would be 8.5 mph. That's just over a 7 minute mile pace.

The key to this workout is starting at a speed that is challenging but not overwhelming. And that is exactly why this workout can be done over and over. You can experiment with different speeds each time, or try to progressively improve your overall distance.

We use this workout as part of our fitness regimen about every two weeks. Increasing the speed really burns fat, and it is a bit of an endurance test, lasting forty five minutes. Try it and see what you think!

Red-Wine Varieties Grown In South Africa

Red wines is the predominant wine of choice and is used as a celebratory beverage and for toasts at banquets, ceremonies and special occasions.

Cabernet Franc - Related to Cabernet Sauvignon, this variety is usually softer, has a lower sugar content and contains less alcohol. Used as a component in classic, Bordeaux-style blends but also for varietal wines. Small but increasing vineyard area. Unless specified, 'Cabernet' refers to the Sauvignon and not the Franc variety.

Cabernet Sauvignon - An increasingly significant variety at the Cape, it's the foremost variety of the Bordeaux region of France. Cabernet Sauvignon produces top-class wines that develop well with age into spicy, full, complex wines. As in Bordeaux, it may be blended with Merlot or its relative, Cabernet Franc.

Carignan - Flourishes well in warm, dry areas. Originated in Spain, also widely planted in the south of France and grown in North Africa. Insignificant plantings in South Africa. Produces a light dry wine or is used as a blending component, particularly in Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz.

Cinsaut - Previously known as Hermitage. A strong bearer and very versatile variety - it can be used to blend with Cabernet, to produce reasonably priced early drinking wines, or as quality wine for brandy distilling. It is also often used for rosé, port and jerepigo wines. Once South Africa's most widely planted red varietal, vineyard area has decreased as it has been replaced by more noble varieties.

Gamay (Noir) - Mainly light red wines in the nouveau style are made of this grape in France's Beaujolais region. Several reds are made locally in a similar early drinking style.

Grenache (Noir) - One of Spain's most important varieties where it's known as Garnacha, this hardy grape is resistant to drought, wind and sun. Typically used for blending with Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Malbec - Once a significant component of Bordeaux's blend but no longer found in the region's best vineyards, this spicy variety is now mainly grown in Cahors in western France where it's known as 'Cot'. Argentina's signature variety, it's also grown in Chile. Very small plantings in SA, varietal and blended bottlings.

Merlot - An early ripening variety, traditionally used as a blending partner to add softness and breadth to Cabernet Sauvignon but now increasingly being bottled as a varietal wine, with some superb results locally. Planted in increasing quantities, particularly in the Stellenbosch and Paarl regions.

Mourvèdre - Originated from Spain, where it's known as Monastrell (in California and Australia it's known as Mataro). The spicy notes make it a good blending partner with cultivars like Shiraz. Small vineyard area locally.

Muscadel - This variety produces a very popular sweet red wine, particularly in the Little Karoo. Miniscule plantings in South Africa.

Nebbiolo - Big, tannic wines with lengthy ageing potential are made from this grape in its home terroir of Piedmont in Italy. Tiny plantings here.

Petit Verdot - This superb variety is used in small percentages in Bordeaux-style blends and can also be made into cultivar wines. Limited plantings locally.

Pinot Noir - The king of Burgundy but notoriously difficult to grow elsewhere. Although not yet widely planted, this variety is now producing excellent wines in the cooler viticultural areas of South Africa. Wines tend to be lighter in colour with distinct vegetal flavours and aromas. A large proportion is used in Cap Classique sparkling wines.

Pinotage - A local cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (Hermitage), created by Professor Abraham Perold in 1925, this variety combines the noble characteristics of the former with the reliability of the latter. Unique to South Africa, it can produce complex and fruity wines with age but is also often very drinkable when young. With great strides made in the making of Pinotage, South Africa's own variety is rapidly gaining increasing acceptance and finding favour worldwide both as a varietal bottling and in blends. The 'Cape blend' is an evolving term which generally denotes a red blend with Pinotage as a component making up 30 to 70 percent of the wine.

Roobernet - A 1960s local cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Pontac, it has an unusual (for reds) grassy character. Withstands diseases particularly well. Can be made into a cultivar wine, also a good blending partner, particularly in combination with Pinotage for a uniquely South African blend.

Ruby Cabernet - A Californian cross between Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon, this prolific producer is suited to warmer areas.

Shiraz - A noble variety of French origin. Better known as Syrah elsewhere, the largest production of Shiraz is now found in Australia but local plantings have increased strongly. Made in several different styles here, it yields deep purple smoky and spicy wines which develop a complex character with age.

Souzào - Originally from Portugal, this is one of the traditional port varieties. Its high fruit sugar content and strongly pigmented skin give taste and colour.

Tinta Barocca - Considered one of the best varieties for the production of port in South Africa. It produces earthy, organic red wines and is excellent for blending.

Touriga Nacional - Regarded as the best variety for port, it's one of the oldest cultivars in the Douro area of Portugal. Produces wine with a very dark colour and a strong ripe berry character with around 13% alcohol.

Zinfandel - This leading Californian grape variety (the same as Italy's Primitivo) is planted on a limited scale in South Africa.

Cardio Workouts - Exercises For Serious Fat Loss

One of the most effective combos for some serious fat loss is circuit training along side interval training. The following gives you a program to make you sweat out a blast of fat within 45 minutes!

You should know your Maximum Heart Rate and your correct training zone to know if you are training at the right pace. You can easily find your Target Heart Rate (thr) with this simple method. Subtract your age from 220 (226 for women) to calculate your Maximum Heart Rate (mhr). Find your training zone below and multiply that number times your maximum rate.

Healthy Heart Zone (Warm up) 50-60% of maximum heart rate

Fitness Zone (Fat Burning) 60-70% of maximum heart rate

Aerobic Zone (Endurance Training) 70-80% of maximum heart rate

Anaerobic Zone (Performance Training) 80-90% of maximum heart rate

Red Line (Maximum Effort) 90-100% of maximum heart rate

Here is a sample of a 35 year old male who is working out in a training zone for fat burning (70%):

220 - 35 = 185
185 X .70 (70%) = 129.5 beats per minute

Strict form for this training is a must in order to maximize gains and prevent injury. Before you begin make sure you have a towel on hand, some water and really good cross trainer type sneakers well tied.

Follow the below with no rest in between until it says so, then repeat for one more round! These may seem menial but I DARE you to try it, I guarantee you will get your butt beat!

20 pushups
20 walking lunges per leg
10 burpees
Skip rope for 1 minute
20 bicep curls
50 Ab crunches on ball
20 Tricep Dips
25 Jumping Jax
10 deadlifts, stiff legged
20 Front Delt Raises
Stair stepping for 2 minutes
Rest for 5-7 minutes while stretched in muscle worked for 10 seconds remembering to stretch each side.

Sometimes we forget that it only takes a few simple exercises to get to our goals and that we can work with what we have. A gym is excellent but how about those who do not go to a gym for whatever reason? Something like this can be done at home as well. What if you did not feel like going to the gym because of weather or time constraints? This program eliminates excuses and keeps you on your game!

Water helps to get that fat out of your system so sipping throughout your workout is hugely advantageous and recommended.

This workout is well complimented by doing it 2 times per week with 2-3 extra days of 20+ minutes cardio work on a cross trainer or jogging. The stretching portion will help you recover for your next round as well as helping eliminate lactic acid build up which can cause delayed onset muscle soreness.

6 Aging, Fitness, and Health Myths Debunked (Myth 1 of 6)

Aging Myth #1(of 6)

People Are Living Much Longer

Hardly a day goes by when someone doesn't remind us of how we are living much longer now than we used to.

As surprising as it may be, according to Dan Georgakas, author of The Methuselah Factor, 1995, the life span of a human being has not changed since recorded time.

With the event of good sanitation practices, septic systems, and, later, antibiotics, the collective average life span of a given population has increased. In the 1700s, the average person lived for 20 to 40 years in Europe.

Today, we live, on the average, to our mid-seventies. This increase did not occur because individuals are living longer, but because there are significantly fewer deaths caused by childbirth, infant deaths, and infectious diseases spread by the lack of sanitation.

Georgakas says that once someone reaches the age of 60, someone in today's world lives no longer than the people did at the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Dr. McDougall says in Twelve Days to Dynamic Health, 1991, that once a person in the 1970s reached the age of 45, he only lived about 6 years longer than a person who lived back a hundred years before that time.

We no longer die young of acute, infectious diseases and at childbirth. We primarily die of chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and strokes, which are usually preventable by our diet and lifestyle choices.

How long do the old age specialists, gerontologists, say we are designed to live? Up to 100 years old, and in good health.

The Naturally Playful Sandbox - Is it Really Worth the Money?

The Naturally Playful Sandbox is a fantastic all round piece of equipment but relatively expensive as far as sandboxes go. With money stretched further than ever these days, is it really worth the money? You will just have to read on to find out.

Some peoples idea of a sandbox is probably no more than a hole in the ground filled with sand. However this could not be further from the truth. A proper sandbox must be enclosed with a proper lid and more importantly must be using the right sand.

Luckily, this particular Step 2 manufactured sandbox features a nicely designed lid with a sunshine motif on the outside. A lid is essential for keeping out contaminants such as leaf litter and insects and is especially important to keep out neighborhood cats which may want to use the sandbox as a place to do their business.

A lid is also perfect for keeping out the weather if it decides to rain or to prevent a fierce wind from blowing all of your sand into the neighboring yard. A small piece of advice - use a heavy object to weigh down the lid if you think it is going to be a particularly windy day or night, just to be on the safe side.

More often than not however the weight of the lid itself should be enough to withstand what the elements can throw at it.

Another obvious advantage of using a lid and keeping your sand contaminant free is that you can reuse sand from year to year. Sandbox sand, or play sand as it is also called, is more expensive pound for pound than regular landscaping sand because it is treated to make it cleaner and safe for kids.

Therefore it would make sense to save money and just reuse your sand wherever possible. Speaking of sand, the Naturally Playful Sandbox holds a fair amount of it - about 200 pounds of sand should be enough to get you started.

George Michael - 13# ♫ Freedom 90' ♫ (Rock in Rio 27-01-91)

Official Page: www.georgemichael.com "♪ ♫ ♪ George Michael and Wham! Fans ♪ ♫ ♪" : www.youtube.com Rock in Rio II ♫ Freedom '90 ♫ "Freedom '90" was released on Epic records in 1990. The song was a highly-praised confessional project from George, acknowledging his fortune and luck from his early days with Wham! - referring directly to Andrew Ridgeley as his "buddy" - but maintaining that he was a changed man, with a more cynical and grown-up attitude to the business he was in. It also acted as a catalyst to his effort to break free from his publishing contract with Sony Music. As if to prove the song's sentiment, George refused to appear in the video, which was directed by David Fincher, and instead recruited a number of supermodels (including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz and Cindy Crawford) to mouth the words. It also featured the destruction of various symbols of George's past, including the famous guitar, jukebox, and leather jacket of the Faith era. Freedom! '90 was six and half minutes long. The addition of the year to the title was to distinguish the song from Freedom, a #1 hit for Wham! back in 1984. It was the third single to be released from the album Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 and had contrasting fortunes on each side of the Atlantic - a #8 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA, but only #28 on the UK singles chart. Radiant Skin Solutions - Discover Which Skin Care Formulas You Should Use If You Want Radiant Skin

With all of the different skin care creams, lotions and cleansers on the market today it is hard to determine which ones are really good radiant skin solutions.

Some of the designer products in stores can cost hundreds of dollars and many are quite disappointing in their results. Some can actually be harmful to your skin or to your health.

As skin ages, it loses its moisture, elasticity, shine and firmness. When looking for radiant skin solutions, elasticity, shine and firmness back into your skin and avoid products that cause irritation, blemishes, dryness and health problems.

Some of the most common ingredients in moisturizers, lotions and creams that claim to be radiant skin solutions are actually quite harmful to your skin.

If you see fragrance, alcohol, parabens or dioxane on the label - put it back on the shelf! These are the most harmful ingredients in use in cosmetic products today.

They cause dryness, allergic reations, dizziness, headaches, irritation and possibly cancer.

The ingredients you should be looking for in radiant skin solutions include collagen, Cynergy TK, Coenzyme Q10 and Phytessence Wakame.

Cynergy TK is a new discovery in skin care.

It contains functional keratin, which stimulates the growth of elastin, collagen and new skin cells, which firm and beautify the skin.

It is also an incredible moisturizer.

Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful anti-oxidant. In particular, Nano-Lipobelle H-EQ10 is a form of Coenzyme Q10 that is able to penetrate deep into the skin to nourish and purify it from the inside out.

Phytessence Wakame is Japanese kelp that blocks hyaluronidase, which is a harmful enzyme that damages elastin and collagen, making the skin appear old and dull and creates dark circles under the eyes.

These four ingredients together create the ultimate radiant skin solution.

Choose An Omega Watch For Olympic Quality Precision

Bond, James Bond, if those words stir your martini then you knows Omega. The official bond watches were made by Omega. An Omega watch is not only known for its status but also is a masterpiece of perfect time keeping.

Omega watches are used in times where precision is of importance and so sports timekeeping is their forte. Omega watches were used as early as 1932 in the Los Angeles games where all the events used an omega timepiece. They invented the first waterproof photoelectric cell as well as the first photo finish camera but undoubtedly their best innovation has been the Omega watch. Since the beginning of the century the Olympic games have been using Omega watches and they have been awarded the Olympic cross of Merit for "exceptional services to the world of sport". Swimmers and athletes all over the world today rely on an Omega watch to keep their time. Needless to say the watches enjoy a very high level of trust built by decades of delivering

Omega watches not only rule the third planet but have traveled in space as well. In March 1965 NASA chose Omega as the only watch to have cleared the severe test conditions laid down by them. It won the "snoopy awards" in 1970 for helping divert a potential disaster. Omega's speed master has been the only watch to land on the moon and thus the name moon watch was earned by it.

So what makes an Omega watch so precise - The Co-Axial escapement. George Daniels came up with co-axial escapement design that reduces friction and thus ensures greater precision than a watch that uses the lever escapement theory.

Many celebrities have endorsed omega watches. Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, James Bond and other such Hollywood personalities have been brand ambassadors for Omega. Michael Schumacher, Ian Thorpe and Ernie Els are some of the various sports personalities that lend their names with pride to Omega.

Omega watches dorn wrists of both the genders. Women have been charmed with their elegant designs while the men fall for their sporty image and their sleek looks. Of course the reliability factor is the major advantage of owing an Omega. Some of the well known Omega series of watches are Seamaster, Constellation, Axial, Aqua terra, Speedmaster and of course the Deville co -Axial series. All these watches have the co-axial escapement and most of them are scratch resistance and anti-reflective.

Omega is the last letter of the Greek alphabet, thus the company that was considered the last word in watch making, earned its name in 1903. For all those people out there who wear a watch to tell time and so steer clear of the fancy ones in the market, an Omega is for you. Not only does the watch inspire complete faith but also dorns good looks as well as a sturdy body. So if you are planning to be late for work and blame your stopped watch for it, then steer clear of an omega watch.

Celebrities Who've Had Laser Eye Surgery

Taking care of yourself and the way you look is important to everybody, but even more so for people who spend most of their lives in the public eye. Celebrities are generally under quite a lot of pressure in their daily lives, but luckily they also tend to have access to the health benefits and beauty treatments that can help them stay ahead of the game.

With such fast paced lifestyles, it's hardly a surprise that so many celebrities have joined the thousands of people around the world who are enjoying the freedom of laser eye surgery.

With stars ranging from TV presenters to sports men and women, there are plenty of people in the public eye who've decided that laser eye surgery is the best choice for them. Those who follow an active lifestyle are perhaps more likely than others to consider the benefits of having eye surgery and there are plenty of people from all different disciplines who have joined the ranks of those who've chosen the surgery. From snooker players such as Stephen McGuire to Olympic rower Tom Solesbury and rugby players like Max Evans, there are plenty of different types of sportsmen enjoying the effects of laser eye surgery.

Actors who have to be adaptable from show to show are also among those who are quick to see how laser eye surgery could aid their careers as well as their day to day life. Brad Pitt is a superstar who's had the surgery, as is Australian beauty Nicole Kidman and sizzling supermodel Cindy Crawford.

Reese Witherspoon and Courtney Cox from Friends are just a few other actors who're in the laser eye surgery gang, and there are many more names that could be added to the list including UK favourite Cat Deeley.

There are plenty of singers who've gotten in on the action, including the world famous Elton John and the irrepressible Barry Manilow. Jessica Simpson is a young genre-crossing star who likes to get active so laser eye surgery must have seemed like a good choice to her and it seemed like a good choice to her sister too, as Ashlee Simpson has also chosen to have treatment.

With so many stars choosing laser eye treatment, more and more people are finding out about the surgery and seeing the results it can produce - this is likely to ensure that the procedure continues to grow in popularity with celebrities and non-celebrities alike.

Thank you Cindy Sheehan for a Courageous Battle Fought

It's a pity that Cindy Sheehan has given up her fight against the war in Iraq. She announced this at the end of May, 2007. She officially left the Democratic Party after the Democratic controlled congress passed a bill authorising the continued funding of the war in Iraq. This was after some feeble attempt at opposition.

Cindy started her fight against the war in Iraq when her son Casey died serving in the war. Although she spoke at events and started an organisation with other people, she really only made the news, and the first time I read about her, when she set up a tent outside Pres Bush's ranch outside Crawford, Texas.

She insisted that she wanted to have a meeting with Bush to ask why the USA was still involved in the war. Although several cabinet ministers went out to speak to her, she was adamant that only Bush would do. She threatened to camp there every time Pres Bush was at the ranch.

There has been a fair amount of support given to Cindy. She has received some negative press as well. The negative press could probably stem from the fact that Cindy voiced some opinions that were either not based on too much fact or which were made at the wrong time.

One of her not so good moments stems from comments she made about CNN's non-stop coverage of Hurricane Rita. She was sympathetic to the people and their loss but felt that there were other things in the USA and the rest of the world that also needed attention. She was perfectly right with her assessment, but it would probably have been better politics to think that, rather than to voice her opinion.

In her parting letter she voices an opinion that the American people care more for who is the next American Idol, than what is happening in Iraq. I would, however, imagine that this of course excludes the families of the 3 500 that have died or the close on 26 000 wounded soldiers who certainly care more about what is happening in Iraq than the Idols competition.

It doesn't matter though that she might have rubbed up some people the wrong way, that some of her comments might have been ill-advised. She was and still remains a courageous woman to take on the might of the government and presidency and to make some noise against an ill-advised war in Iraq. She certainly made a lot more noise as an individual person than many of the anti-war organisations.

Look at Europe, Africa, Pacific Rim countries, far east Asian countries such as China, who do not really support this invasion by the USA into a country under false pretenses with one thing in mind and that is to control oil. But how much did they object? How much are they objecting now? It's as if the war does not exist in the public. Sure, on a daily basis one reads the numbers of fatalities and the bombings etc that are happening.

Mostly the attacks being reported on, are the ones being committed by resistance fighters/terrorists or whatever one wants to call them. Not often does one see what damage the occupying forces are causing. The press is buying into the whole theme of the USA needs to be in Iraq because of the horrific bombings etc that are killing innocent people. These attacks are happening because the United States is in Iraq.

So another lonely voice in the wilderness has given up on fighting against a senseless war. Not that the war in Iraq is the only senseless war happening in the world. But I think the war in Iraq could possibly be the only one where the number one world power invades and occupies another country with absolutely no reason. Except possibly for a large number of oil fields in that country.

One thing is certain. Cindy Sheehan need never hang her head in shame. She has done and achieved far more than any of us couch critics have done. In her own way she will have contributed to the swing in sentiment in the USA where in 2003 75% thought they had not made a mistake in invading Iraq, which by May 2007 had changed to 61% believing that they should have stayed out of Iraq.

Shy Your Wrinkles Away With Botox Injections

The eternal dream of man to remain beautiful and young forever has always been a motivating factor towards innovation and experimentation. This dream has been responsible for the increasing popularity of cosmetic surgery, leading to the sudden influx in the use of botox. Looking young is considered a fashion statement, especially in America, London and across the glamour world. Supposed to reduce the fine lines of age on your face, botox injections are fast acquiring a craze across the world. Such is its craze that people are ready to dish out any amount of money for this drug.

A single vial of botox can cost anything within $200 to $1000; the cost often depending on the whims of the doctor. According to BBC World Business Report, botox sales in the US alone were more than $300 in spite of the fact that it was not promoted as a cosmetic drug directly to the doctors and the consumers. This clearly testifies to the growing consciousness about botox among the people and the miraculous effects that it carries in its fold. In fact, popular demand can be cited as one of the major factors that have compelled the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to rethink its decision to ban botulinum toxin.

Questions might arise on the reasons behind the ever increasing demand for botox. The obvious answer lies in the desire of people to defy their age. It's not just that people engaged in the glamour industry take recourse to botox treatment. People who can afford this form of treatment are ready to undergo the entire ordeal of receiving botox injections, the count generally centering around 14 in number. They are not even deterred by the idea that they would have to bear similar intensity of pain periodically as the botox effect lasts for a few months and needs to be re-injected. A number of renowned personalities and celebrities of Hollywood have taken botox injections and with good effects. People are now aware about the secret behind the ageless beauty of Cindy Crawford or any other model above the age of 40. Periodical injections of botox, vitamins and collagen cast a magical spell on your skin making it tighter and smoother, at the same time restoring its elasticity.

Not just America, recent trends suggest that the men of London, especially the executive class in their 30's, are availing botox treatment on a large scale. The stress of their busy lives, along with increasing competition takes a toll on their overall appearance and personality. This leads them to look for a quick solution to their ageing problem that they now find in botox. London has become a cosmetic surgery hub in recent years with the emergence of a number of cosmetic surgery clinics providing anti-aging solution through botox injections. No wonder more and more people are flocking to rediscover their youth through botox London.

History of Westlake Golf Club Cape Town South Africa

When landlords Clovelly Estates went into liquidation during the Great Depression of the early 1930s, the members of the Clovelly Country Club tried to buy the course, which was situated alongside the Silvermine River in Fish Hoek Valley, from the executors of the insolvent estate. They were not successful, as the Messrs Ackerman and Pevsner's bid was accepted. They duly formed the Clovelly Country Club. Membership was offered to all members of the original Clovelly Golf Club, but the majority of the members decided to move away and purchase their own golf club.

First Clubhouse:

The building was converted from a cottage in 1932 on the farm of Mr. Hendricks. Raapkraal Road (later Westlake Avenue).

An elderly dairyman, Mr. Hendricks, owned a farm "Raapkraal" at the foot of Silvermine Mountain near Lakeside and it was here that the members of the old Clovelly Golf Club moved to found their new course. A meeting was held in the hall of the local Kalk Bay Anglican School on the 31st March 1932, at which the members agreed to accept the terms of Mr. Hendricks' lease and form a new golf club, which was named Westlake.

The lease of the farm "Raapkraal" (55.369 morgen) was for nine years, with an option for a further nine years at a fixed rate of £10 per month. A cottage on the farm was included in the lease and was altered to form the original Clubhouse. There were 112 founder members and they all contributed in some way or another towards the layout of the new course. Under the watchful eye of "Oupa" Harrison and Mr. H.B. "Pop" Lee, members gave time and effort, as well as cash. The original layout of the course ran up and down the mountain slope, as opposed to the present layout, which runs along the gradient of the mountain.

The nine-hole course was opened for play on the 1st September 1932. The inaugural competition was won by Dennis Langton, who was later to be come the Club Champion before he was tragically killed in action during World War II.

The constitution was drawn up by Mr. Tudhope, a local attorney, and the bye-laws were adopted in 1933. Subscriptions we £3-0-0 per annum. At the first Annual General Meeting in March 1933, it was decided that every effort must be made to extend Westlake into an eighteen-hole course. Architect Dr. D.C. Murray was duly appointed and plans similar to today's layout were drawn up. Work began almost immediately after the members had approved these planes.

Mr. Hendricks was now elderly and wished to sell the farm. He offered the course and Clubhouse to the members for the sum of £5500. This offer was accepted in October 1935. This gave the members new impetus, as they were now the proud owners of their own golf course. It was not long thereafter that the new 18-hole layout was completed and the first competition was played on 14th April 1936 among much pomp and ceremony.

Westlake was soon on the golfing map, with Mr. Otway Hayes, son of the founder and honorary life member, Dr. J.O. Hayes, receiving his Springbok colours in 1937. He won the SA Amateur in Durban in 1939 and was runner-up in the Natal Open. 1938 was a gala year for the club, as it won for the first time, the Stephan Trophy - a first league interclub tournament which is still keenly contested today.

Clubhouse Changes:

Some of the early changes to Westlake's Clubhouse. Further alterations and extensions were completed in 1989 and again in 2000. Today's Clubhouse boasts excellent amenities in a modern setting.

A new Clubhouse, designed along the traditional gabled Cape Dutch lines was built in 1939.

The War Years (1939-45) took their toll on the Club finances, as well as the loss of three members who were killed in action. Membership dropped to fifty and it was only though the efforts of the elderly members of the likes of Messrs T. Stevenson, H.B. Lee, E. Tudhope, A.H. Ashley-Cooper ad W.H. Short who kept Westlake going through this tragic period. Each later received Honorary Life membership.

With the return of ex-servicemen after the war, Westlake received an injection of keen young members who joined the older founders of the Club. A tremendous immigration drive from the UK during the late 1940s added further numbers. Membership soared from 87 in 1945 to 255 in 1948. This new drive of members, spearheaded by "Mr. Westlake" - Rex Walker, ensured the Westlake remained on sound footing. It was Rex who negotiated with the Cape Town City Council for the sole use of the Silvermine Reservoir overflow, known as "brown water".

A pipeline was duly constructed and this was the main source of additional water supply, the lifeblood of any golf course, for near on fifty years. It was not until the recent linkage with Steenberg Estate's effluent water system that "brown" water ceased to be the main source of alternate supply to augment the costly municipal "white" water. The Steenberg lining was an historic milestone in the history of Westlake, with a fully reticulated watering system, and was responsible for the rapid transformation of Westlake into one of the premier golf courses in the Western Cape.

Throughout the history of Westlake, camaraderie and club spirit have abounded and many members have come forward and have given both time and effort to ensure the growth and success of Westlake. This has rubbed off on the staff, many employees having served the Club for decades.

Course and Clubhouse alterations and improvements have been very evident over the last twenty years. Well known golfers have praised the layout and condition of Westlake- among these were Bobby Locke in the 1950s and 60s and Gary Player in the 1980s.

Westlake has hosted the SA Intervarsity Golf Championships, the SA Under-23 Interprovincial, the Nomads Nationals and the SA Amateur, which was held in 1999.
