"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today." - James Dean

JAMES BYRON DEAN

James Dean was born on February 8th, 1931 in Marion, Indiana. His hobbies were writing, painting, bullfighting (when did that happen?), photography, sculpting, car racing, horse racing and playing the bongos. His favorite drink was coffee and his favorite ice cream flavor was coffee and raspberry.

LIFE IMITATES ART

"To grasp the full significance of life is the actor's duty; to interpret it his problem; and to express it his dedication. Being an actor is the loneliest thing in the world. You are all alone with your concentration and imagination, and that's all you have. Being a good actor isn't easy. Being a man is even harder. I want to be both before I'm done."

GENERATION NEXT

James Dean's first professional acting gig was a Pepsi commercial. Since then, Michael Jackson, Cindy Crawford, Michael J. Fox, Shaquille O'Neal, Jeff Gordon, Ray Charles, Billy Crystal, Britney Spears, Beyonce, Shakira, The Osbournes, Faith Hill, Sammy Sosa, Joe Montana, Ken Griffey Jr., Gloria Estafan, Tina Turner and many others have endorsed the blue canned beverage.

BRAD'S CHOICE

Before Pepsi was called Pepsi, it was called "Brad's Drink" way back in 1898. Well, another Brad, Brad Pitt is now vying for the chance to remake James Dean's first film, "East of Eden" with Pitt in the starring role. Dean's performance in "East of Eden" won him an Oscar nomination, making him one of only five actors to receive a nomination from their first screen performances. He was also the only actor in history to receive more than one Oscar nomination posthumously.

ANIMAL FARM

"Studying cows, pigs and chickens can help an actor develop his character. There are a lot of things I learned from animals. One was that they couldn't hiss or boo me. I also became close to nature, and am now able to appreciate the beauty with which this world is endowed."

FOUR EYES

Dean was required to wear glasses while driving as he was nearsighted. The king of cool, had to wear glasses, if only he had been around long enough to do a public service announcement for that, then being a "four-eyes" would have meant a completely different thing these days.

THESE GO TO ELEVEN

No matter what kind of music James Dean listened to, he liked it LOUD! But what did he listen to? After all it was the early 50's and Elvis had yet to become the King, the Beatles had yet to become the Fab Four...What did James Dean rock out to, before there was Rock? He liked African Tribal music, Afro-Cuban songs and dance (Dean liked to play the bongos), Classical music - especially Bartok and Stravinsky, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday.

THE ACTOR WAY

"When an actor plays a scene exactly the way a director orders, it isn't acting. It's following instructions. Anyone with the physical qualifications can do that. So the director's task is just that ñ to direct, to point the way. Then the actor takes over. And he must be allowed the space, the freedom to express himself in the role. Without that space, an actor is no more than an unthinking robot with a chest-full of push-buttons."

FRANK, BILLIE AND JIMMY

It has been said that James Dean's favorite song was Billie Holiday's "When Your Lover Has Gone" and his favorite album was Frank Sinatra's "Songs for Young Lovers".

ACTING THE PART

"An actor must interpret life, and in order to do so must be willing to accept all the experiences life has to offer. In fact, he must seek out more of life than life puts at his feet. In the short span of his lifetime, an actor must learn all there is to know, experience all there is to experience, or approach that state as closely as possible. He must be superhuman in his efforts to store away in the core of his subconscious everything that he might be called upon to use in the expression of his art."

DEAD MAN'S CURVE

Dean only made three Hollywood pictures, propelling him into super stardom. As his final film, Giant, was wrapping up in Marfa, Texas, Dean was driving his Porsche Spyder to an auto race in Salinas, California. His car collided with another can outside Cholame, California. James Dean, an American legend, died on September 30th, 1955. The Failure Analysis Associates later re-created all the details of the accident at the same approximate time on September 30th, and concluded that James Dean was traveling 55 to 56 m.p.h. when the fateful accident occurred, thereby proving he had not been speeding, despite the fact that he had received a speeding ticket only two hours before the crash.

APOCALYPSE NOW

"Jim Dean and Elvis were the spokesmen for an entire generation. When I was in acting school in New York, years ago, there was a saying that if Marlon Brando changed the way people acted, then James Dean changed the way people lived. He was the greatest actor who ever lived. He was simply a genius." - Martin Sheen

GIANT

"Every time I go to Europe, I remember that James Dean never saw Europe, but yet I see his face everywhere. There ís James Dean, Humphrey Bogart and Marilyn Monroe windows of the Champs Elysees, discos in the south of Spain, restaurants in Sweden, t-shirts in Moscow. My life was confused and disoriented for years by his passing. My sense of destiny destroyed the great films he would have directed, the great performances he would have given, the great humanitarian he would have become, and yet, he is the greatest actor and star I have ever known." - Dennis Hopper

South African Scuba Dive - Great White Shark Cage Diving

There are two areas where Great White diving is done, Gansbaai and Mosselbaai. Both these destinations can be reached with a scenery drive from Cape Town International Airport. Below is some information on these areas and Great White Cage diving. Also some information on other diving sites.

Daily shark diving/sighting tours (weather permitting) are done off Gansbaai, a mere stone-throw away from the most southern tip of the African Continent. Approx. 12km offshore from Gansbaai (2hrs drive from Cape Town) there are two islands situated next to each other. Due to a number of geographical reasons - one being the shallow and narrow channel that runs between these two islands - Dyer Island has become known as one of only two unique areas in the world, where the chances to view the great white shark, rises exceptionally high. Other wildlife species such as Cape Fur Seals, Cape Gannets, Cape Cormorants, Jackass penguins, whales and dolphins are also likely to be sighted.

Gansbaai is little holiday and fishing village situated a 160km from Cape Town. The area has several attractions for the nature lover with whale watching being the most popular. Accommodation may be taken close by at a very nice chalets with small harbour and sea views offering excellent meals. The shark dives are launched from the neighboring Kleinbaai. Cage diving is strictly regulated by the authorities and conducted in an ethical way in accordance with international standards. It is bsolutely safe and you need not have any diving experience at all, only a short course on safety and the use of the equipment.

On a typical day we meet the skipper early in the morning and then head out about 9 am and return about 3 pm - depending on the conditions, wind direction and currents you proceed to one of numerous holes, put down anchor and set out the bait. Only bait that forms part of the animal's natural diet is used.

We then wait for the Great Whites to find us. This can take anything from minutes to several hours. In the meantime every one is briefed on the procedures, and the cage is put into the water. The cage is securely attached to a platform on the back of the boat and the top of the cage floats about 23cm above the water. It is constructed of steel bars and is closed off at the top by means of a gate.

Once the first shark is spotted the bait lines are drawn in towards the boat so that everybody has the opportunity to view and admire this magnificent predator. The first cage renters the water and the lines are drawn slowly towards the cage to lure the shark. This is an emotional and heart stopping experience.

It must be remembered that these are wild animals, and no guarantees can be given that they will be sighted on a particular day. It is therefore advisable to budget for at least two consecutive days diving. Statistics kept of sightings over the last five years in Mosselbaai help to pick the best possible time of the year being April to July and September to November. In late Aug and early September 2004 there is a lot of shark activity, they are seeing 9 - 15 sharks a day.

In Gansbaai the best time of the year is in our winter season (April - September), when the sharks are particularly active in their feeding patterns (80-99%). Even though you still have a chance of seeing the sharks during the other months (October - February), their feeding patterns are different and they tend to have inconsistent feeding behaviour by feeding actively the one day and less active on other day's. However, due to breeding season amongst the seals on Dyer Island during the months November to January natural feeding predations are often seen in the area. Sighting rate in the low season is approx. 60%.

How To Make Stunning T-Shirts With Iron On Transfers

Do you want to have a highly customized t-shirt design? One of the easiest and best ways to do this is with iron on transfers because with the right kind of design, you are in complete control of the final output of your mini project for your shirt. And it is not really a hard thing to do.

The first thing that you should finalize is the kind of design that you would like to have on your t-shirt. While there are many decals out there that look like plain stickers that you iron on to your clothing, the problem with this is that the design is already done. There is not much customization that you can do with it, as opposed to having your own design made from scratch.

One of the best that you can try is using rhinestone and Swarovski crystal motifs. These are like little crystals or beads that you can place one after another on your t-shirt and create your own unique design. You can spell out your name or create an outline of a drawing. In short, the possibilities are endless.

So how can you have your own amazing iron on transfers for your t-shirts? The most common ways and practical ones include the following:

You can use a computer software to help you with your design.

If you know Photoshop, CorelDraw or any other design and graphics software then you can easily create your own template or design where you can base your crystal designs on. But the problem with this is that you need to know how to operate such a computer program. So if you are not that technically advanced then you may want to look at other options.

Get your design and your t-shirt online.

There are online services that can do the iron on transfer design for you as well as getting it printed or transferred to a t-shirt. You do not have to send them your t-shirt because you can simply choose from their inventory. You can also select the font of your design, the artwork that you want or you can send them your own design and they will make the transfer for you. It is perhaps one of the easiest ways to do it.

While these two mentioned here can get you great customized shirts, you may also want to do a more hands on approach to it especially if you are more of an artist at hand. Here are some tips that you may want to keep in mind to make your customization a success.

The iron must be really hot.

Most packaged iron on transfer designs will note in their instructions that you need a hot iron. And when they state hot, they really mean hot. Keep that in mind otherwise you will not get good results from it.

Always print a preview.

To help you save from ruining a costly transfer paper, print your design first on a regular paper. This way you will see first if the design was done correctly and that you will know it will be printed with less chances of errors.

Use a hard surface for ironing.

Ironing boards may do the job but not as ideally as hard surfaces like formica or wooden boards. The reason a hard surface is necessary is because it holds the heat better and longer than ironing boards. This is important during the ironing of your design to your t-shirt.

Hopefully, these tips and suggestions will help you succeed in making some really good iron on transfers on your t-shirts. You can make this a hobby or eventually, when you are really good at this, you can even start a business based on it.

Gospel Singer Beverly Crawford Career Profile

Effervescent gospel vocalist and ordained evangelist, Evangelist Beverly Crawford, was born in the early sixties in Gainesville, Florida. One of seven children in a household headed by her pastor father, Walter Camp. The young Beverly became exposed to gospel music from the earliest time she could remember. Like many other gospel divas, she began singing at a very age, making her debut at the tender age of three, at her father's church. Raised in Gainesville, the young Beverly joined her four sisters by singing at their father's church. By this time music was already in her blood and the young Beverly was already rehearsing future performances: years later she recalled with mild amusement how she would often sing as a young child in front of her father's house, with a stick as a microphone; and the grass as her audience!!

The young Beverly began performing her four sisters in the family gospel group which became know as the Camp Sisters, and quickly gained popularity through Gainesville and surrounding areas of Florida.

After surviving cancer, in 1989 Beverly and her husband Todd Crawford founded the Potter's House Ministries, a development inspired by Beverly's renewed and unshakable faith in God and her passion to serve Him through ministering and music. Also that same year, Todd recorded a video of the Camp Sisters performing and sent copies to various gospel promoters and media organizations. Gospel legend Dr. Bobby Jones was suitable impressed by the recording. Jones, who hosts the Bobby Jones Gospel, a television programme hosted on the Black Entertainment Channel, invited Beverly and the other Camp Sisters group to his Sunday morning show. After several successful appearances, Beverly was invited by Bobby Jones to join his group, New Life.

Beverly performed with Bobby Jones and New Life for six successful years. She featured on recordings
Bring It to Jesus and the Music City Mass Choir's We Need to Hear It From You, before launching out on a solo career.

Beverly's solo career began with the release of her first debut album Jesus, Precious King in 1995 under the Warner Bros label. This was followed three years later in 1998 by her second album release, Now That I'm Here. Precious King brought Crawford a Stellar Award nomination and Now That I'm Here brought her recognition with a Grammy Award nomination in 1999.

Crawford released a studio album Beverly, in 2001 on T.D Jake's Dexterity Records platform; a vibrant production featuring eleven tracks brilliantly blended from elements of traditional gospel, pop, jazz and funk. Crawford continues to manage a hectic touring schedule which includes an incredible 200 concerts each year, inspired by her passion and devotion to the ministry.

Beverly and her husband Todd have two children. Their daughter Latrina also featured in her mother's 2003 album Live Family and Friends, which also featured Shirley Murdock, Bobby Jones and Melvin Williams.

Beverly Crawford is a living embodiment of the endless possibilities that can be attained, based on an unshakable faith in God and total devotion to serve Him through ministering and through song.

Body Image: Learning to Love Your Body

Twenty-four percent of women and 17 percent of men say they would
give up more than three years of life to be thinner. That's according
to a poll conducted by Psychology Today magazine.

At the same time, studies show that half of American women overestimate
the size of their bodies.

Sociologists who study the western-world phenomenon of poor body image
attribute the problem to a variety of factors, including media and cultural
influences, as well as parental and peer messages.

The advertising industry ties the already complex issue of body image with
materialism. A slender body is associated with wealth, health, and
attractiveness. A heavier body is associated with sloth, indulgence,
and a lack of self-control.

Psychological factors can add to the effect of media and culture. Girls
who experienced sexual abuse or an emotionally difficult puberty are
more prone to body dissatisfaction as adults. So are women who feel they
have little control over their lives.

Women who have felt the most brutal blows from poor body image say it is
not a single factor acting in isolation. Jennifer Tracy, who battled
bulimia for nine years, says a combination of factors, such as a
non-supportive family environment and a poor self-image, snowballed in
the presence of cultural influences.

"If I had love for myself or love from my family," Tracy says, "it
would not matter what a model looked like, and it would not affect
my personal self-esteem."

~The Dangers of Body Dissatisfaction

When we realize that it is a combination of influences that lead
to body dissatisfaction, we empower ourselves to solve the problem.
We can seize power by breaking the chain of these influences
wherever we can.

Carolyn Strauss is a top plus-size model, author of Specialty Modeling,
and a nationally recognized expert on body image issues, from
fashion to self-esteem. Her accomplishments now include her own
clothing collection featured on the Home Shopping Network. Through
it all, she helps other women move toward a more positive body image.
Strauss says the biggest danger of a negative body image lies in the
power it gives away.

"When someone has a poor body image, she will try to find validation
from outside to make her feel better. The next diet, the next fashion
fad, the next boyfriend, anything but where she is now. Instead of
living in the moment, she may find herself living for 'when I look better,'"
Strauss says. "Remember, the goal of most advertising it to make you
'not OK' so that, upon using that product, you will become OK. I say,
start OK and then you'll only buy what you choose to have for yourself."

Most of us can think of a time when we thought a new haircut, diet,
or lipstick would turn everything around for us. But that mindset
can lead to a lot of wasted time and money. Constant self-monitoring
can also drain your energy, and it can even lead to depression and hostility.

A University of Toronto study, published in the International Journal
of Eating Disorders, found that women who were interviewed after seeing
magazine ads that featured female models showed a significant and immediate
decrease in self-esteem.

Poor body image can lead to crash dieting and excessive exercise,
which can, in turn, lead to poor nutrition, injuries, and depression.
In it's most dangerous form, a negative body image may fuel an eating
disorder or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).

When you are continually distracted with physical appearance, the
energy of your mind, body, and spirit is diverted from more salient
endeavors.

~Solutions

Seek help.

If you feel that your body image has become a pre-occupation, don't
hesitate to talk to a counselor or therapist. Amoreena Brewton, a
mother with a background in sociology and counseling, has conducted
research on women and body image. She says, "Some people are too
deeply entrenched in their body issues to resolve them on their own.
Often, there are personal or familial issues at play when a person has
an eating disorder, so seeking professional help is highly recommended."

Tracy agrees. "In the end, my success came from the deep desire to
stop, which had been inside of me for years, and then getting into
serious therapy with an eating disorder specialist. Having someone
who focuses on just that area was a true lifesaver."

Make small changes.

A global change in cultural and economic structures would, no doubt,
help us all achieve a more positive body image. But there will likely
always be supermodels, paid endorsements, and the unstoppable "quest
for the best" bandwagon.

Instead, enforce changes on a smaller scale. Brewton suggests we
stop allowing those negative forces into our lives.
"Don't buy Cosmo, buy Redbook," she says. "Look at really powerful,
intelligent successful women whom you admire as often as possible.
For example: Oprah, Rosie, Hillary, Martha, your mom, your grandmother,
your daughter."

Use positive affirmations.

When you catch yourself commiserating over tight blue jeans,
don't let your mind get stuck in the negativity. When that
negative voice does emerge, follow it with 10 positive thoughts.

Tracy says repetition is key. "It begins with re-recording
the negative messages in your own mind, which are so painful,"
she says. "I have probably re-recorded that message
over 500,000 times, and I keep losing it. But it's easier to find
for the next time."

There are tools to help you re-program the thoughts you
direct at yourself. One successful example is the
"Think Right Now" series of audiotapes and software
programs:

http://www.momscape.com/thinkrightnow/

Specifically, TRN's Eating for Excellent Health program
http://www.momscape.com/thinkrightnow/eatingforhealth.htm -
helps listeners regain a positive outlook on food and its power.

Once you navigate yourself out of the negativity rut, you'll feel
better about yourself, and you'll better understand your power to
create and maintain a healthier mind, body, and spirit.

Remember your spiritual connection.

"The first thing to remember is that the Universe does not make
mistakes," Strauss says. You are where you are for a reason.
Acknowledge this and then choose how to proceed with the next
minute, hour, day, of your life."

For the religious and spiritual among us, body image may
instantly improve with the simple reminder that God gave you
the body you have for a reason. He didn't make you to look
like Cindy Crawford because you aren't Cindy Crawford. He
wants you to be healthy enough to do your life's work. To
live and work at an optimum level. So, accept His creation,
and nurture it.

Surround yourself with supportive friends.

"As I began to recover little by little from bulimia," Tracy says.
"I did not surround myself with people who were as concerned
about body size. I put myself among beautiful, strong, and
intelligent women who really put little emphasis on looks."

Brewton also recommends surrounding yourself with friends
whose focus is not on exteriors. "Other women can make the
biggest difference in our lives by being mentors and leading
by example," Brewton says. She suggests we find a group of
women to meet with regularly to discuss issues important to
our lives, but, she says, don't focus solely on body issues.
"Obsessing as a group is no better than obsessing as an
individual," she says.

Find a group of supportive women, either in your neighborhood
or online. Then use this safe, non-critical environment to
empower one another.

Focus on health.

Change your relationship with food. Food is fuel for active living.
Strive not for a number on the scale but for a weight at which you
feel strong and energetic. Ask yourself if your diet
contributes - or takes away from - your health and energy levels.

When we stop focusing on our bodies, and begin to focus on our
health, our bodies have an easier time finding our optimal weight.
Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have
discovered that people who start a weight-loss program when they
feel happiest about their body are more than twice as likely to
lose weight as people who are less satisfied.

Tracy proves that we can control how much power food has over us.
"One of the most important factors in my success has been to eat
everything and anything I want, whenever. I do not diet, restrict,
or make rules for myself in any way. This sets my life up so
that I don't ever feel restricted and needy for food. It has
taken a lot of the importance out of food for me," Tracy says.
"Since I quit my bulimic behaviors, I have lost 15 pounds, my
face and cheeks are not swollen, and I feel really good."

Change your relationship with exercise.

Regular exercise creates power and endurance, which can help
you enjoy more activities. Can you hike as far as you like?
Would you like to try kayaking? Do you know the joys of a
"runner's high"?

Find an exercise you enjoy. If you hate aerobic dance, don't
join an aerobics class. If you hate the gym, don't spend your
time there. Instead, experiment with exercises you've never
tried before. Is there an exercise that makes you feel physically
empowered? Do that one.

Motivate yourself to exercise by reminding yourself about the
burst of energy that inevitably follows a workout.

Change your relationship with your body.

When food becomes a tool for active living, and exercise
becomes a tool for increased strength, your body becomes a
tool for your mind. Suddenly, your body has the endurance
and power to do what the mind wills.

"Our bodies are miracles, walking around in skin," Brewton
says. You will never come across a finer work of art or
machinery."

Befriend your body, and ask yourself how you want to spend
your life energy. "Imagine for a moment that you took all
that time you spend thinking about appearance and focused
on how much you love your ability to communicate well, or
what a great mom you are, or ways to solve the issue of
homelessness," Brewton says. "If you took that negative
energy and used it for good, not only would your life
improve, but the world would improve, as well."

Not Goal Setting But Goal Achievement

Once again it's that time when we restate our ambitions and propose to achieve more, be more, or refrain from doing that thing we could live with a lot less of.

"This year I will..." How will you rephrase that sentence?

The reality is we set goals on New Year's Eve that we never really take ownership of or even truly expect to accomplish. Have you ever made a wish? Sure you have, we all have. On Thanksgiving, we have a ritual in our home where two of us clench opposing ends of the turkey wishbone, we quietly make a wish and pull. As the ritual goes, after the brutal conflict ends the victor of the large piece of the wishbone will have his dream become real, it hardly does.

Why you may ask?

After all we have been taught that if we put a commanding enough intention out into the universe we can accomplish it. I was also told, "If it's God's will, it will come to pass." I presuppose both of those statements are correct. But here's the thing, for the higher power or the universe to dash in and help you get what you want you have to do more than just wish for it, you have to recognize exactly what it is that you crave first.

Another way of saying it, the last time I came up with the big half of the wishbone I prayed for a million bucks and I did not get it. And that may have been a good thing. Because had I received my wish, I may have been surrounded by a colossal herd of big horn elk. Asking for a million bucks is just too vague to be anything more than a dream.

Notwithstanding, wishes do sometimes come true. But I'm confident the majority of us would rather not bet our life on the uncertain outcome of a dream.

You possess what Maxwell Maltz calls, an "internal success mechanism." It's the piece of you that will move the rest of you kicking and yelling if necessary towards what you really yearn for in life. This year you can start programming your internal success mechanism by turning your "New Year's Resolution" into an exact intention for your goal achievement.

That requires getting very clear on precisely what you desire, why you desire it, and write it down as a clear and comprehensive goal achievement statement. The reality is your power is bottomless. You can have everything you wish for but you must first make it a true intention. Then you can shout as loud as you can, "This year, I will..."

En Route To Be A Supermodel

The glitz and glamour of the fashion industry may keep us jaw-dropped in awe and desire, but rest assured, it does not come easy. We keep drooling over the gorgeous ladies and gentlemen in godly shapes and looks, which put the ramp on fire, and secretly wish to be like them. However, what we see is only the end. The means often remain buried beneath all the hype and hoopla.

Being a supermodel is no duck soup! The path to this pinnacle of limelight is a result of persistent dedication and hard work. Many young men and women see modeling as a lucrative career option and aspire to be famous supermodels, only to get disillusioned after they set foot on the rough roads to this end. Indeed, you need to have it in you to be one. Now, what is it that one needs to have?

First and foremost, one will need the never-say-die attitude, the stamina and confidence. There are ups and downs in this profession, there are people who will try to balk your steady success curve, and there will be moments when you would be working days and nights without sleep and you would wish you had never come. But all said and done, you need to hang on if you want to be the ‘chosen one’. That is the basic criterion.

Once you have the right attitude to pursue your dream, next comes the look factor. The ideal shape for a female model would be a 34”-24”-34” with a height of 5’9”. If you match this or anything very close, you can flaunt almost any fashion costume and woo the world’s admiration. A good model must have a shapely body, beautiful hair and skin. For men models, the standard height is 5’11” to 6’2” with a size of 40”-42”.

Time to reach out to a modeling agency [http://www.projectstar.co.uk] and coordinator now! The kick-off to your modeling career rests with these agencies, which will train you with workshops, courses, local shows and print modeling. They will also help you find a photographer to create your portfolio and comp card. Remember, choosing the right photographer is also a vital decision. A skilled man at the lens would capture your best looks, which you can sell to the fashion world. So being a little choosy with the photographer helps at times. Go through the photographers’ portfolio before you appoint him/her to shoot you.

Now when you have everything in place—the attitude, confidence, professional skills, attractive portfolio and comp card—it is time to move ahead and get real assignments. The agencies provide models with work and take a commission against it. The rest depends on you. Take for instance the UK supermodels Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista or Naomi Campbell. They have dreamt big and stayed persistent. You can be one of them too! Just believe in yourself.

South African History [The British Colonial Era] - Part 2

In 1795 the British occupied the Cape as a strategic base against the French, controlling the sea route to the East.

After a brief reversion to the Dutch in the course of the Napoleonic wars, it was retaken in 1806 and kept by Britain in the post-war settlement of territorial claims. The closed and regulated economic system of the Dutch period was swept away as the Cape Colony was integrated into the dynamic international trading empire of industrializing Britain.

A crucial new element was evangelicalism, brought to the Cape by Protestant missionaries. The evangelicals believed in the liberating effect of 'free' labor and in the 'civilizing mission' of British imperialism. They were convinced that indigenous peoples could be fully assimilated into European Christian culture, once the shackles of oppression had been removed.

The most important representative of the mission movement in South Africa was Dr. John Philip, who arrived as superintendent of the London Missionary Society in 1819. His campaign on behalf of the oppressed Khoisan coincided with a high point in official sympathy for philanthropic concerns.

One result was Ordinance 50 of 1828, which guaranteed equal civil rights for 'people of co lour' within the colony and freed them from legal discrimination.

At the same time, a powerful anti-slavery movement in Britain promoted a series of ameliorative measures, imposed on the colonies in the 1820s, and the proclamation of emancipation, which came into force in 1834. The slaves were subjected to a four-year period of 'apprenticeship' with their former owners on the grounds that they must be prepared for freedom, which came on 1 December 1838.

Although slavery had become less profitable because of a depression in the wine industry, Cape slave-owners rallied to oppose emancipation.

The compensation money, which the British treasury paid out to sweeten the pill, injected unprecedented liquidity into the stagnant local economy.

This brought a spurt of company formation, such as banks and insurance companies, as well as a surge of investment in land and wool sheep in the drier regions of the colony in the late 1830s. Wool became a staple export on which the Cape economy depended for its further development in the middle decades of the century.

For the ex-slaves, as for the Khoisan servants, the reality of freedom was very different from the promise. As the wage-based economy developed, they remained a dispossessed and exploited element in the population, with little opportunity to escape their servile lot.

Increasingly, they were lumped together as the coloured people, a group which included the descendants of unions between indigenous and European peoples, and a substantial Muslim minority who became known as the 'Cape Malays' (misleadingly, as they mostly came from the Indonesian archipelago).

The coloured people were discriminated against on account of their working-class status as well as their racial identity. Among the poor, especially in and around Cape Town, there continued to be a great deal of racial mixing and intermarriage throughout the 1800s.

In 1820, several thousand British settlers, who were swept up by a scheme to relieve Britain of its unemployed, were placed in the eastern Cape frontier zone as a buffer against the Xhosa chiefdoms.

The vision of a dense settlement of small farmers was, however, ill-conceived and many of the settlers became artisans and traders. The more successful became an entrepreneurial class of merchants, large-scale sheep farmers and speculators with an insatiable demand for land.

Some became fierce warmongers, who pressed for the military dispossession of the chiefdoms. They coveted Xhosa land and welcomed the prospect of war involving large-scale military expenditure by the imperial authorities.

The Xhosa engaged in raiding as a means of asserting their prior claims to the land. Racial paranoia became integral to white frontier politics. The result was that frontier warfare became endemic through much of the 19th century, during which Xhosa war leaders such as Chief Maqoma became heroic figures to their people.

By the mid-1800s, British settlers of similar persuasion were to be found in Natal. They too called for imperial expansion in support of their land claims and trading enterprises.

Meanwhile large numbers of the original colonists, the Boers, were greatly extending white settlement beyond the Cape's borders to the north in the movement that became known as the Great Trek in the mid-1830s. Alienated by British liberalism, and with their economic enterprise usurped by British settlers, several thousand Boers from the interior districts, accompanied by a number of Khoisan servants, began a series of migrations northwards. They moved to the Highveld and Natal, skirting the great concentrations of black farmers on the way by taking advantage of the areas disrupted during the mfecane.

When the British, who were concerned about controlling the traffic through Port Natal (Durban), annexed the territory of Natal in 1843, those emigrant Boers who had hoped to settle there returned inland.

The Voortrekkers (as they were later called) coalesced in two land-locked republics, the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State. There, the principles of racially exclusive citizenship were absolute, despite the trekkers' reliance on black labor. With limited coercive power, the Boer communities had to establish relations and develop alliances with some black chiefdoms, neutralizing those who obstructed their intrusion or who posed a threat to their security.

Only after the mineral discoveries of the late 1800s did the balance of power swing decisively towards the colonists. The Boer republics then took on the trappings of real statehood and imposed their authority within the territorial borders that they had notionally claimed for themselves.

The Colony of Natal, situated to the south of the mighty Zulu State, developed along very different lines from the original colony of settlement, the Cape.

The size of the black population left no room for the assimilationist vision of race domination embraced in the Cape. Chiefdoms consisting mainly of refugee groups in the aftermath of the mfecane were persuaded to accept colonial protection in return for reserved land and the freedom to govern themselves in accordance with their own customs. These chiefdoms were established in the heart of an expanding colonial territory.

Natal developed a system of political and legal dualism, whereby chiefly rule was entrenched and customary law was codified. Although exemptions from customary law could be granted to the educated products of the missions, in practice they were rare. Urban residence was strictly controlled and political rights outside the reserves were effectively limited to whites. Natal's system is widely regarded as having provided a model for the segregationism of the 20th century.

Natal's economy was boosted by the development of sugar plantations in the subtropical coastal lowlands. Indian-indentured laborers were imported from 1860 to work the plantations, and many Indian traders and market gardeners followed.

These Indians, who were segregated and discriminated against from the start, became a further important element in South Africa's population. It was in South Africa that Mohandas Gandhi refined from the mid-1890s the techniques of passive resistance, which he later effectively practised in India. Although Indians gradually moved into the Transvaal and elsewhere, they remain concentrated mainly in Natal.

In 1853, the Cape Colony was granted a representative legislature in keeping with British policy, followed in 1872 by self-government. The franchise was formally non-racial but also based on income and property qualifications. The result was that Africans and coloured people formed a minority although in certain places a substantial one of voters.

What became known as the 'liberal tradition' at the Cape depended on the fact that the great mass of Bantu-speaking farmers remained outside its colonial borders until late in the 19th century. Non-racialism could thus be embraced without posing a threat to white supremacy.

Numbers of Africans within the Cape colony had had sufficient formal education or owned enough property to qualify for the franchise. Political alliances across racial lines were common in the eastern Cape constituencies. It is therefore not surprising that the eastern Cape became a seedbed of African nationalism, once the ideal and promise of inclusion in the common society was so starkly violated by later racial policies.

Moles - When to Worry

Most moles are the result of heredity. If your mom or dad has a mole, then you are very likely to also have a mole. It is believed that moles that are not caused by heredity are caused by overexposure to the sun, like freckles or age spots.

Protecting your skin for excessive sun rays is so important. Every dermatologist will tell you that the sun does more damage to the skin than all other environmental agents put together. Use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 15. Avoid being in direct sunlight between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, and if you must be in the sun during those hours, wear sunscreen AND a hat and protective clothing...long pants and long-sleeved shirts.

Okay, back to moles. Moles on the face have often been called "beauty marks" and intentionally enhanced. Cindy Crawford, Enrique Iglesias, and Madonna all have rather famous moles. Moles that aren't wanted are most often removed by dermatologists using liquid nitrogen. Sometimes there will be a small scar left as a reminder that there was once a mole.

Moles are as unique as snowflakes. No two people have absolutely identical moles. Moles are symmetrical and can be any color - flesh tone, tan, brown, or black. Moles are generally not a health concern, but rather a cosmetic problem or enhancement depending upon your point of view.

However, if a mole changes color or shape, you should immediately consult your doctor. Moles that stay the same color and are symmetrical are not cancerous, but if they change color or shape, it is possible that they have become cancerous. Even those who have moles that have not changed color or shape should have a screening for cancer at least once a year. You just can't be too careful!

Breast Cancer The Cure

You have my permission to publish this article electronically or in print, free of charge, as long as the bylines are included. A courtesy copy of your publication would be appreciated.

Breast Cancer The Cure

There is no known cure for breast cancer. More than 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year worldwide. Scientists don't know why most women get breast cancer, yet breast cancer is the most frequent tumor found in women the world over. A woman who dies of breast cancer is robbed of an average of nearly 20 years of her life. Breast cancer knows no social boundaries. It’s a disease that can affect anyone. Some prominent women who’s lives that have been touched by breast cancer include Jill Eikenberry actress age 52; Peggy Fleming age 49 figure skater; Kate Jackson age 50 (Charlies Angels); Olivia Newton-John age 50 actress singer; Nancy Reagan age 77 former first lady; Melissa Etheridge age 43 singer; and the beautiful Suzanne Summers actress. These high rates of breast cancer are not acceptable to the women of the world and must be met with scientific research that provides results.

Despite over a decade of research, and more than $1.7 billion spent, hundereds of women worldwide are dying from breast cancer every day. Yet doctors don’t know how breast cancer starts or how to cure it. Doctors are still approaching treatment for breast cancer in the same old fashioned ways: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Barbarick treatments…And scientists keep doing the same old redundant research that’s simply not working. It doesn’t have to be that way. Gen Cells Cures is a scientific biotechnology company that is focused on a cure for breast cancer. The company is dedicated to curing breast cancer before it’s too late for you. We’re not interested in a cure in five, ten, or twenty years from now. We want your cure for breast cancer within a year or two. We don’t want you to have to under go surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or take toxic drugs.

Why Gen Cells Cures? You can search the medical journals; you can search the internet until your blue in the face. You will find the same old news which is no new news about breast cancer research and treatments. Breast cancer research is locked up in a black whole. Gen Cells Cures is approaching the cure for breast cancer from different angles and using tomorrow’s scientific technologies today. Our expertise is in stem cell research and genomics. Malfunctioning stem cells have already been linked to the development of breast cancer. We’re not talking about using generic stem cells from an egg and sperm cell. There is no genetic match for you with the politically controversial generic stem cells that are always in the news. The isolation of cancer stem cells, coupled with our understanding of genetic mutations causing cancer, and our knowledge of genomics will result in ways to eliminate cancer cells while sparing normal breast tissues.

Genetics and Breast Cancer

People will tell you to accept what you can’t change…Your genetics, your genes, the genes your mother and father handed you when you were born that came with their particular genetic make-up. Most inherited cases of breast cancer have been associated with two genes: BRCA1 and BRCA2. The past five years has been a period of unparalleled discovery in the field of genetics, genomics, and stem cell research, but these discoveries are not being applied to breast cancer treatments. A job that Gen Cells Cures definitely wants to get our hands dirty in. Recently researchers have found that by blocking a gene called beta1-integrin the growth of tumor cells can be stopped. When this gene was removed the tumor cells quit growing. You don’t have to accept the genes that you were given at birth. Gen Cells Cures will be able to manipulate your genes to cure your breast cancer.

Our Cancer Stem Cell and Genomics Program will bring together the top scientific minds in the world under one tin roof to maximize the use of diverse approaches to the understanding of cancer genomics fused with stem cell solutions. Gen Cells Cures isn’t looking for a multi-million dollar biomedical research center like the Stowers Institute in Kansas City, which is a medical center to be admired. A rented tin shack will do just fine. Of course, we would accept hand-me down michroscopes from the Stoweres (billionaires who bought their own multi-million dollar biomedical research center) if they would be gracious enough to grant them to us or we would accept a small prime the pump check to move forward with our research. The Stowerses and all the scientists from the Stowers Institute have an open invitation to visit our lab in the Caribbean. What we are looking for is a cure for breast cancer to stop the humiliation, pain and suffering this menace to society causes millions of women and thousands of men worldwide, and not a new biomedical center… Every dollar invested with us goes into pure medical research and equipment. The same offer goes out to all the millionaires and especially the billionaires of the world. People that come to mind are: Paul Allen, Bill and Melinda Gates, Jon Huntsman, William and Alice Goodman, Ann Lurie, Jamie and Karen Moyer, Harold C. Simmons, Alfred Mann, Sumner M. Redstone, Michael Milton and the Palm beach billionaires, there are simply too many to mention. The combined wealth of the three Microsoft billionaires alone is more than ten times the amount spent by the U.S. Federal Government on research to fight cancer and other deadly diseases. We know we’re in the wrong business to become billionaires ourselves. This kind of biotechnology has never produced even one billionaire. It’s the cure for breast cancer that we want.

Simply put the cancer research organizations are funding the wrong researchers. It’s time to go outside the normal research channels. Do something different. The same story year after year after year and no cure. These unmotivated researchers just aren’t getting results. Let someone else have a shot at it. It’s time to try something new and different. A different approach. There are races for the cure, golf tournaments for the cure, there are walks for the cure, there are foundations for the cure. These foundations have been funding the same ineffective research for more than twenty years now. These foundations have been betting on the wrong horse. Joining the crusade won’t help if the research being done doesn’t take on a twenty-first century scientific approach. It’s been time to move forward scientifically for five years now. But today’s breast cancer researchers are stuck in a twentieth century mind-set. The Excuse is someday we’ll find the cure, but someday doesn’t help today’s victims of breast cancer. We need top notch scientific action today.

The genetics are out of the bottle and stem cell research is moving forward whether the U.S. government likes it or not. Gen Cells Cures has moved off-shore to the Caribbean to avoid the political controversy over stem cell research. I am sure you won’t mind a walk on the beach with me to talk about your cure for your breast cancer. Once we have the cure we can take the cure from the bench to the patient without a long and costly wait for FDA approval. There are many advantages to not having big brother breathing down your neck. The governments of the United States and Western countries have nothing to offer except road blocks, red tape and detours. Our patients don’t have time for political smoke and mirrors. With a little luck we could have your cure before the time comes that you need that dreaded surgery and chemo.

Our gifted world-class researchers are visionary and have been schooled in winning and have courage, creativity, can-do attitudes, burning desires, unfaltering belief and an obsession that they will be there first. By first we mean years ahead of the other biotechnology companies. Like determined, fighting NASCAR drivers our scientists are living to take the chequered flag of biotech and win the coveted race for the cure for breast cancer.

Focused on breakthrough discoveries, Gen Cells Cures nurtures a culture that encourages high standards of excellence, original thinking, hard work and a willingness to take risks. Our world-renowned scientists believe in themselves and its belief that gets us there. The company will seek to develop a work environment that is results focused and team-orientated. We compete against time. Though we compete intensely we maintain high ethical standards and trust and respect for each other. Quality is the cornerstone of all our activities. We seek the highest quality information, decisions and people. Our success depends on superior scientific innovation. We see the scientific method as a multi-step process which includes designing the right experiment, collecting and analyzing data and rational decision making. It is not subjective or emotional but rather a logical, open and rational process.

Our success comes from one simple fact; we are committed to being a science-based, patient-driven company, driven by that one special breast cancer patient…you.

Gen Cells Cures lost most of our one million dollar start-up money in offshore bank scandal and currency devaluation last year. We are now actively pursuing financial support. Unfortunately, the Gen Cells Cures team is made up of great scientific minds and not great marketers, salesmen, or fund raisers. Yes, we are looking for a millionaire or billionaire without a cause to support our work, but if you are not our wealthy saviour, we welcome any help, be it financial or a donation of your time. The scientific team is on stand-by. What we’re lacking is the funding to go forward. We could use motivated salesmen to sell our research, fund raisers, skilled internet marketers or someone just to pass out flyers or mail out promotional material. We could use help from the media with publicity stories, ads and promotions to get the word out. We are particularly interested in looking for assistance from the billionaires of the world; there are approximately 600 in the world. Billionaires like Sergey Brin and Larry Page (Google billionaires), Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, and Oprah Winfrey and others who control the media could get our life-saving message to the world fast. We are also hoping that some of my celebrities friends will come forward and spread their wings to help support our breast cancer research: Steven Seagal, Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes, Danny Glover, Erik Estrada, Tom Arnold, Dolph Lundgren, Roger Clinton, Bill Clinton, Usher, Hulk Hogan, Ivana Trump, John Secada, Sylvester Stalone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mike Reno, Richard Branson, Cindy Crawford, Cher, Demi Moore, Michelle Pfeiffer, and other stars that I have had the good fortune of meeting in person and others celebrities that I hope to meet in the future. (Photos of Gerald and the stars can be viewed at his promotional group listed below.) I am waiting to get my photo with Suzanne Summers!

Gen Cells Cure offers more than hope. We can do the job. If you’re going to eradicate cancer you have to have the right people doing the right research. One thing is for sure. We couldn’t do any worse than what the scientists before us have done. Which is virtually nothing! Help us alleviate the pain and suffering. Together, with your help, we can cure breast cancer.

10 Tips to Date a Cougar

There are many reasons a Cougar can appeal to you. When I think of a Cougar, Samantha off "Sex in the City" comes to mind, she plays a vivacious, sophisticated woman with a sexual libido that rivals rabbits in spring.

Although her character is fictional who she portrays is not. Women at older ages are more attune with there wants, needs and desires.

While Men's sexual stamina is slowing down, Women's desire for intimacy is coming into full bloom. It seems like the worlds cruel joke to have such a wide gap in the ages of sexual maturity but it true, while guys are thinking about sex in there 20's, women are hitting there peak in their 30's or 40's.

This age gap gives a perfectly logical reason why cougars exist but there are other reasons as well.

Men aren't the only ones that get mid-life crisis. Women want to feel young again too but instead of buying that corvette or going skydiving, they look to a younger generation. There are many appeals to dating young. Most younger men don't have any strings attached, a youthful personality, and are more willing to try new things.
Revenge can also be a reason; don't be surprised if your new cougar is recently divorced, like recently divorced professional wrestler Hulk Hogan. When word got out that Hulk Hogan had found a girlfriend that could pass as his daughter it wasn't long after ex-wife Linda Hogan had found a 19 year-old boy toy of her own.

So what are the best tips for getting and keeping a cougar?

1. Treat Her Like A Queen -
Treat any women like a queen and she will be flattered and curious. Pay her compliments, open doors for her, notice the details. Did she get her nails done? Tell her you love the color.

2. Don't Ever Tell Her She is a Cougar -
It's another double standard term label put on women that can be offensive. When men go after younger women its ok, but when a women does it, watch out! She's a "cougar".

3. Move to the City -
Places like California and New York see Cougar Dating as the newest hot trend. Think Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, a very hot couple.

4. Don't Make Her Feel Old -
Just like the feeling you get when a waiter ask you for an ID when buying alcohol you want to replicate that feeling again and again. But don't be fake about it, like saying she looks like Cindy Crawford if she doesn't. Tell her you love how smart she is, or how amazing her legs look in those jeans.

5. Dating Sites -
These are exceptional places to find Cougar Dates, browse for your cougar in comfort of your house and let them come to you.

6. Give Her New Experiences -
Most women are looking to do things they never did when they were younger, whether that is shooting pool at the billiard, going to a concert, or playing mini golf with friends.

7. Don't be to Needy -
Older women are independent and don't want a guy controlling there life.

8. Make her Feel Young but no too Young -
Beer Binging and Halo War parties are out of the question. She doesn't want to feel like she stole you from the crib.

9. Let Her Rule the Bedroom -
She is probably way more experienced in this department, let her show you what she knows and what she likes.

10. Same Expectations -
Make sure you are both on the same page before getting into a deep relationship. Is she looking for a casual relationship or long-term. This is important to know so you're both not wasting your time.

Get Your Best Look With Iron on Transfers

More and more people are getting hooked on to iron on transfers. It's easy to see why. When all you need to do is to peel and slap on a design, these have become the quickest way to make a fashion statement.

Swarovski iron on fabric transfers are a good choice if you want to flaunt the stylish class of diamonds. These crystals are finely cut with patented precision technology which is what makes their appearance so much like real diamonds. Rhinestones also look striking. In most cases though, these are the more affordable alternatives to high class hot stick clothing designs. These would be your best option if you have a limited budget and you need to make a huge bulk order for an event or a group.

You can easily buy your own iron on transfers from craft stores. You just have to take special care when applying them. You need to be especially careful in following instructions when it comes to heat levels. Otherwise you could end up ruining both your shirt and your design.

If you need to stick designs on more than a couple of shirts, you might want to just contact experts. You'd be able to save more by buying in bulk from product and service providers and you can rely on quicker and better results than if you poured your energies on the task yourself.

When you pick a company, make sure you choose one that will offer you a variety of options when it comes to design, color and apparel. Travel Planning & Immunization

For some countries no immunizations are necessary, but the further off the beaten track you go the more necessary it is to take precautions. Be aware that there is often a greater risk of disease with children and in pregnancy.

Leave plenty of time to get your vaccinations before you set off: some of them require an initial shot followed by a booster, and some vaccinations should not be given together. It is recommended you seek medical advice at least six weeks prior to travel.

Record all vaccinations on a International Health Certificate, which is available from your physician or government health department.

Discuss your requirements with your doctor, vaccinations which may be required include:

Cholera:

Despite its poor protection, in some situations it may be wise to have the cholera vaccine eg for the trans-Africa traveler. Very occasionally travelers are asked by immigration officials to present a certificate, even though all countries and the WHO have dropped a cholera immunisation as a health requirement. You might be able to get a certificate without having the injection from a doctor or health centre sympathetic to the vagaries of travel in Africa.

Hepatitis A:

The most common travel-acquired illness after diarrhea which can put you out of action for weeks. Havrix is a vaccination which provides long term immunity (possibly more than 10 years) after an initial injection and a booster at six to 12 months. Gamma globulin is not a vaccination but is ready-made antibody collected from blood donations. It should be given close to departure because, depending on the dose, it only protects for two to six months.

Hepatitis B:

This disease is spread by blood or by sexual activity. Travelers who should consider a hepatitis B vaccination include those visiting countries where there are known to be many carriers, where blood transfusions may not be adequately screened or where sexual contact is a possibility. It involves three injections, the quickest course being over three weeks with a booster at 12 months.

Japanese B Encephalitis:

This mosquito-borne disease is not of great risk to travelers. It occurs in Asia. Consider the vaccination if spending a month or longer in a high risk area, making repeated trips to a risk area or visiting during an epidemic. It involves three injections over 30 days. The vaccine is expensive and has been associated with serious allergic reactions so the decision to have it should be balanced against the risk of contracting the illness.

Meningococcal Meningitis - Healthy people carry this disease; it is transmitted like a cold and you can die from it within a few hours. There are many carriers and vaccination is recommended for travelers to certain parts of Asia, India, Africa and South America. It is also required of all Haj pilgrims entering Saudi Arabia. A single injection will give good protection for three years. The vaccine is not recommended for children under two years because they do not develop satisfactory immunity from it.

Polio:

Polio is a serious, easily transmitted disease, still prevalent in many developing countries. Everyone should keep up to date with this vaccination. A booster every 10 years maintains immunity.

Rabies:

Vaccination should be considered by those who will spend a month or longer in a country where rabies is common, especially if they are cycling, handling animals, caving, traveling to remote areas, or for children (who may not report a bite). Pre-travel rabies vaccination involves having three injections over 21 to 28 days. If someone who has been vaccinated is bitten or scratched by an animal they will require two booster injections of vaccine, those not vaccinated require more.

Tetanus & Diphtheria:

Tetanus can be a fatal wound infection and diphtheria can be a fatal throat infection Everyone should have these vaccinations. After an initial course of three injections, boosters are necessary every 10 years.

Tuberculosis:

TB risk to travelers is usually very low. For those who will be living with or closely associated with local people in high risk areas such as Asia, Africa and some parts of the Americas and Pacific, there may be some risk. As most healthy adults do not develop symptoms, a skin test before and after travel to determine whether exposure has occurred may be considered. A vaccination is recommended for children living in these areas for three months or more.

Typhoid:

This is an important vaccination to have where hygiene is a problem. Available either as an injection or oral capsules.

Yellow Fever:

Yellow fever is now the only vaccine which is a legal requirement for entry into many countries, usually only enforced when coming from an infected area. Protection lasts 10 years and is recommended where the disease is endemic, eg Africa and South America. You usually have to go to a special yellow fever vaccination centre. Vaccination poses some risk during pregnancy but if you must travel to a high-risk area it is advisable; note that people allergic to eggs may not be able to have this vaccine.

Before you travel discuss immunizatio with your doctor.

War... is all hell.

Views of "Arlington at Crawford" on August 14, 2005. The little crosses were posted along the road to George Bush's ranch. The night after this was filmed an angry Larry Northern of nearby Waco, TX, ran his truck through the crosses, destroying many of them. Set to the song War Pigs. Update: I had to replace the original War Pigs soundtrack with something else since it was a copyright violation.

How to Find a Model Agency and Get Jobs

So many men and women fantasize about achieving the glamour of the modeling life. Many the child, preteen or teenagers have thought all they needed to get started was some glossy photos and transportation to the various gigs.

However, what these budding models find is that photos and poses alone don't pay the bills. As a matter of fact, the majority of the casting calls listed in the paper state "agency only." This means if you want to make it to the majority of the hiring jobs, you need to be listed with an agency.

How to Get Started

There are some tips on how to find a model agency that one should consider before signing on with any agent or manager. To be honest, there are quite a few scam artists out there looking for newbies who don't really know anything about the fashion or modeling business. They prey on teenagers just hoping to break into the business and then systematically begin to extract money from them with no intention of getting them any modeling jobs. These are the ones to avoid.

Fierce Competition at the Top of the List

But, forewarned is forearmed. So, do your research. No, you may not get on with Ford, IMG or Elite the first time out. But you should find an agency that is willing to be honest with you and tell you where your strengths lie and if you truly have a chance in the market place.

Watch Out For..

You shouldn't consider some fly by night company that does not have a physical address. You want to go through the yellow pages and find the various modeling agencies. Look for ones that have an address listed. Call and ask what their screening process is.

Some may have dates for a huge casting call while others may do interviews. Some may have you send in your head shots. Regardless of their process, you will know you did it right for them when you study the requirements for each.

Be Prepared

You do not want to waste your time and photographs on people that aren't the least bit interested. Everyone has different requirements for their models. Find that out ahead of time.

Don't worry if you are not model tall or thin either. Some agencies specialize in "normal" looking people to use in commercial or promotional work.

Fantasy Verses Reality

The goal of being a model doesn't have to be a pipe dream. It can be a reality for you. Just remember, it is a business and you should prepare yourself for it just as you would any other type of job.

Do your research, practice posing techniques every day and educate yourself on the basics. You might not become another Cindy Crawford but you could be working in a profession you really enjoy.
