Interviewing the Interviewer - 5 Questions to Ask

Everyone does a lot of speculating about job interviews from the perspective of the person being interviewed. "What will they ask? What types of responses are they looking for?" But there is another aspect of interviewing that is equally important - interviewing the interviewer.

Why would you interview the interviewer? First, it's as important to you as it is to your potential employer. You need to know if the job is a good fit for your skills, talents and work style. Second, if there is an ideal work situation that you envision for yourself, now is the time to find out if this is that kind of place. Third, if you were dissatisfied with your last job, you can learn if things will be the same in this new place. Now is the time to ask questions, and find out the answers you seek!

So the person who is doing the hiring has finished giving you the full drill. Now it's your turn. What do you want to know? Here are five key questions to ask:

1. Can you describe the work environment?

If possible, find out how many people you'll be reporting to. Ask if you can be introduced to your future boss if you haven't already. Find out how many people make up the immediate department and in what ways will you be interacting with them. Try to open up a conversation about the general "scene" of the workplace, and the company culture... what is a typical day in the life of someone who holds this position? Ask your interviewer that question too!

2. What types of responsibilities will be expected of me?

Beware of open-ended job titles which can involve pretty much anything. You might be under the impression that the "marketing coordinator" does things like run and analyze reports, manage advertising campaigns and things of that nature. Then later on, you discover that your job responsibilities include proofreading and setting up meetings, neither of which you enjoy or excel at! Find out the details before you make a decision.

3. Is there potential for growth?

Many companies have what is known as the "glass ceiling" - where you have just a few opportunities to advance professionally, and then suddenly you hit a barrier and can't go any higher. It's one thing to receive a pay raise every year. But if you're forever stuck in the same job with the same duties, it may not be worth making the commitment. Find out whether the company you're interested in offers training programs for future leadership positions. Ask if there are openings in areas where you can develop valuable skills that you can "take with you" on the path of career development.

4. Can you tell me about employee benefits, sick day policy, vacations and such?

This one should be saved for the second interview, assuming there will be one. Some employers find it off-putting when potentials seem overly eager about taking vacation before they're even hired. Nevertheless, these are all legitimate questions that are important when weighing your options between different potentially rewarding jobs.

5. Will there be any travel involved?

To some people, travel is a rewarding aspect of their career. But to others, things like being in an unfamiliar city and managing your time between flights, hotel check-ins, conferences and trade shows can be very stressful. So find out ahead of time: how much travel, if any, will be involved and under what circumstances? Do you find travel a stimulating part of doing business? Great. But if you think that travel could negatively impact your job performance, don't accept the offer no matter how enticing the pay. There's a better fit out there for you!

Many people go into the interview hoping and praying the company thinks they're the right person for the job. But they are forgetting that it's just as important to find out, "Is this job the right one for me?" Better to learn the answer up front. Remember - a job interview is a two-way street. Make the most of yours.

Hair Raising Chronicles

No matter how we cloaked it, "Girls Day Out," "A Day of Respite at the Spa," or what have you, we always knew, my best friend and cousin Calla and I, that it all came down to one thing. Removing all that fuzzy, downy, in-our-way-on-our-way-to-beautiful hair from our bodies had become our prime objective.

To fully understand the impetus of our undertaking, you must first understand our family. Our huge Greek family is famous for three attributes: our warm, compassionate hearts, our sometime volatile tempers, and our hair. Or rather our hairiness for our problem is not that of the voluminous, silky-smooth, or well-managed variety.

I don't blame you if at first you don't believe me. Stick around for the amusing, informative facts. My Uncle Louis was affectionately nicknamed Malia as a child. Straight translation, you ask? Our hairy one! Oh, it gets better from hereon in. Whereas our Uncle Louis grew a profusion of body hair it was our aunts who would resemble that animal all of we the younger generation lived in terror of. No my friends not the Werewolf, but the Billy goat.

Our aunts seemed to grow a rapidly doubling amount of coarse, dark, unbecoming hair in two nerve screaming regions. You've guessed it, their upper lips and beneath their double chins. But alas, we the younger generation, fresh faced and soft-skinned, didn't get away hair free. In fact, in any Hollywood reality series of "Greek Werewolf Meets Billy the Goat," we two, Calla and I, would star magnificently. Can you say, "Hello, Oscar?"

Oh the joys of fuzzy, dark, dark hairs on otherwise beautifully sculpted arms. Oh the relief in knowing I have a twist of fate in my DNA to thank for pale blond arm hairs on those said arms. Something for which Calla would note I paid dearly for in the Billy goat hairs department. Please, no attempts at imagining it when I admit that maven, they-grow-back-thicker-hairs grow below my single chin. Did I mention too, the Cindy Crawford mole that sits enticingly on my left cheek - black facial hair protruding?

So you can fully understand and knowingly sympathize why we poured ourselves into our undertaking since we were old enough to care about fuzzy facial hair, foul obtrusive body hair, and everything in between. Between us, we have experienced enough, spend enough and learned so very much about the art and science of hair removal. Enough to fill tomes on the chronicles of raising hair. We discovered the secrets to eyebrows that don't glow and sting with heat for hours following plucking or waxing; to waxing legs smooth on a budget; to living through the dreaded Brazilian wax; and everything in between.

LAFF: David Modigliani "Crawford" Q&A Pt. 2 - Jan. 18, 2009

January 18, 2009. David Modigliani Q&A for "Crawford" - Part 2 Moderator: Adam Hyman Location: The Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian Theatre January 2009 was a time of reflection for the entire country. Two days before the end of the Bush presidency, we bid farewell with this superb documentary by first-time filmmaker David Modigliani. Crawford (2008, color, sound, 74 minutes) Los Angeles Premiere! CRAWFORD provides a unique perspective on the Bush presidency: through the eyes of the 705 residents of Crawford, Texas. In 1999, then Governor George W. Bush bought a ranch in the one-stoplight town of Crawford, Texas, calling it "home" just in time to set his sights on the White House. Having invented Bushs "folksy image," the campaign's victory thrusts Crawford onto the world stage and an insular community of barely 700 explodes overnight. While the high school band plays the inauguration and the Baptist pastor declares a miracle, Crawfordites sell souvenirs hand over fist, finding themselves nearly trampled under the heels of the international press corps, patriotic tourists and boomtown opportunists. Then, four and a half years into Bush's tenure, Cindy Sheehan and her peace movement arrive at the doorstep of the "Western White House." Crawford takes center stage. As 20000 impassioned protesters and counter-protesters battle on Crawford's tiny streets, the symbol of the "small town" begins to change. Exacerbated tensions place pressure on the community as well as on the ...

Understanding Laser Eye Surgery

Those who have long suffered from refractive errors will be glad to know that there are revolutionary laser techniques that can help rid them of the hassle of wearing corrective eyewear and benefit from a newfound sense of freedom. These types of laser eye surgeries have grown in popularity in last couple of years - with the advancement of technology and extensive surgeon research in this field - which has resulted in a broader range of people who fall into the suitability bracket.

The most common (and successful) forms of laser eye surgery used to treat refractive errors are LASIK and LASEK (PRK) procedures. Although very similar in terms of results - with most patients regaining 20/20 or 20/40 (driving standard) vision - the procedures themselves are slightly different. After undergoing a thorough screening process, your surgeon will determine your suitability for one of the above surgeries. While LASIK is the most common of all laser eye surgeries, candidates that have a cornea that is not thick or too flat to withstand the LASIK method can be deemed suitable for the LASEK procedure.

The laser eye surgery procedures

The LASEK procedure entails preserving the corneal epithelium - in this way it differs from LASIK surgery as the ophthalmic surgeon does not create a corneal flap or scrape and remove the epithelium. Instead, your laser eye surgeon will treat the area with a diluted alcohol solution which loosens the epithelium. They will then roll back the loosened tissue and work with a laser on the exposed corneal tissue beneath. One the surgery has been completed, the surgeon simply rolls back the epithelium cells smoothly into their newly reshaped position. This reshaping process changes and channels the refraction of light which results in vastly improved vision.

During LASIK eye surgery, your surgeon would have examined your cornea to ensure that it is thick enough to withstand the treatment which entails a laser or a computer-controlled instrument creating a very thin, circular flap of tissue in the outer epithelium. Once this has been cut away and moved aside, the surgeon is provided with a working space in which he reshapes the cornea to change the light refraction in the eye.

Who has benefitted?

Countless people have benefitted from a revolutionary laser eye procedure. The British television Presenter, Phillip Schofield, featured his laser eye surgery experience on ITV's This Morning Show - where he clearly illustrated his delight in the instantaneous results and drastically improved vision. The world-famous golfer, Tiger Woods, also underwent laser eye surgery to correct his vision - it's no wonder he knows how to keep his eye on the ball. In fact, after undergoing the procedure, he went on to win his next five tournaments! A few years ago, Adam Clayton, who plays the bass guitar for U2 also underwent laser eye surgery to correct his refractive error. He reported an improved ability to play the bass as well as improvement in his vision when driving at night. Some other famous celebs that have benefitted from laser eye surgery include: Drew Carey, Elton John, Barry Manilow, Brad Pitt, Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, Michael Bolton, Carlos Santana and Kim Kardashian.

When looking at the list of various international celebrities, it is clear that there are various fields of occupations that can benefit from laser eye surgery. No matter who you are, laser eye surgery can make the world of difference to everyday activities. On top of the vast improvement in vision, many people who have undergone this procedure boast of an improved self-confidence and a mighty boost to their self-esteem.

Which refractive errors are correctable?

Laser eye surgery is one of the ideal options when it comes to correcting the following refractive errors:

• Long-sightedness (hyperopia)

• Short-sightedness (myopia)

• Astigmatism (irregular shaped cornea)

The results, benefits and freedom

Not only are numerous people benefitting from improved vision, but many stand testimony to the incredible difference this procedure can make to everyday life. A LASIK or LASEK laser eye surgery procedure means that the patients who were previously hounded by the financial qualms of glasses or contacts are free of the hassles and afforded the freedom to make their form of corrective eyewear, redundant. Simple tasks like catching a ball, reading the paper or admiring a view are made simpler and more enjoyable. Another fantastic feature of this particular form of laser eye surgery is the fact that patients hardly experience pain, in fact - the procedure involves little to no discomfort.

Post laser eye surgery treatment

To ensure a speedy recovery and relieve any possible temporary discomfort, patients are given prescribed medicated eye drops. To avoid the accidental rubbing of eyes while sleeping, patients are provided with a night shield for roughly the first week. In some cases, patients are fitted with soft contact lenses which also provide further protection and aid the healing process.

The Great Cologne Experiment

Have you ever wondered if you wear a certain type of cologne, will it draw more attention from the opposite sex to you? Do you ever stop to wonder if certain types of fragrances or scents really in fact do attract certain types of people to you? These types of questions were running through my mind and it was driving me nuts trying to figure out if the myth is true or not. So I finally broke down and did a little experiment one weekend to find out if a certain type of fragrance attracts more attention from the opposite sex.

As you know there are many different types of men's cologne and women's fragrances out on the market today that smell great and some that well, you know, the kind of fragrance that makes turn and walk in the other room because the smell is either too powerful or just plain smells horrible. But, on the other hand there are many different types of men's cologne and women's fragrance that just smell so darn good that you just have to go out and buy it the moment you smell someone wearing it. This was to be the basis of my experiment.

The weekend was finally here and I began to start getting things into place for my experiment. I had my girlfriend and her sister come over and start getting ready and plan this big experiment. The funny part about this experiment is that my girlfriend Valerie and her sister Patricia are identical twins. Their ages are only separated by minutes but they look exactly the same. The only difference between them is Patricia has a little birthmark on her cheek, kind of like Cindy Crawford, and well Valerie has a birthmark somewhere only I know about. I explained the game plan of how my experiment was going to work. I had Valerie spray on her best smelling women's perfume before we left the house. She chose to put on Sensi for women. It was designed by Georgio Armani. I don't know if you have ever smelled it before but the stuff smells awesome. I had Patricia just wear an outfit that resembled the outfit that Valerie was wearing but it wasn't exactly the same. Either way, they both were looking hot .My other friends were going to meet us up at the new nightclub that opened up in South Beach Miami called Mansion. Needless to say this was going to be a fun night.

My Great cologne experiment was to work like this. I was going to have Valerie sit at the lower level bar and mingle with one of her friends. I was going to be standing around a little ways back and just watch to see what kind of attention she would get. Remember, Valerie is the one wearing the perfume. Next I had Patricia go to the upper level bar and mingle with her friend as well. I had my friend Mark go with her and watch to see what happens and let me know by text message what was going on.

One hour had passed and by this time the club was insane. Valerie already had received two free drinks just by sitting at the bar and talking with her friend. I sent a text message to my friend Mark to see if anything was going on with Patricia. He replied "nothing so far, the bar tender did send her a free drink." This was very interesting to me. My experiment was working the way I thought it would work.

Another hour has passed and by now the club is getting even more crowded. Again, Valerie was receiving some more attention. This time a dork gave her his phone number. She took the napkin that the number was on and used it to wipe the condensation off her drink. I couldn't help but to laugh. Still things were slow with Patricia, only the bar tender was showing interest in her. Mind you these are not your average girls. I am surprised Patricia was not getting the attention that she normally does.

The night was ending and we decided to leave and go home and talk about this experiment. Valerie told me that not only did she have guys asking her what kind of perfume she was wearing. She was also getting asked by girls as well. She also told me that she thought since she was wearing the perfume it made it easier for guys to break the ice with her and begin a conversation. They all used the same line "what kind of perfume is that?" Patricia told me that the bar tender thought she was a cool chick to hang out with, that's why he kept buying her drinks. She also said"maybe since the bar tender was buying me drinks and talking with me most of the night, maybe the other guys thought I was his boyfriend, who knows."

Either way my experiment worked. Valerie wore her discount perfume and received more attention not only from the opposite sex but other women as well. Patricia didn't do so well but that could have been because of the bar tender. You never know, she may have looked like she was already taken for the night. But, my experiment did prove that wearing a nice smelling cologne or perfume will attract more attention. It's your choice if you want to wear a nice smelling fragrance or not. I always do when I go out for a night on the town. But since this experiment, I realize there is a lot more to wearing mens cologne or womens fragrance then meets the eye.

Getting Rid of Love Handles - Are Your Cardio Workouts Any Good?

Traditionally, cardiovascular or cardio workouts are recommended by weight loss experts for getting rid of love handles. These types of workouts will burn your blood sugar and your body fats if you jog or run for at least 30 minutes! Read on to find out if they are truly effective in getting rid of love handles.

Marathon runners are champions at getting rid of love handles, but do you have the time and stamina to run for more than an hour? Sounds grueling, doesn't it! There has to be an easier way to get the most out your cardio workout.

Cardio workouts can be specially engineered by accomplished trainers to get rid of your love handles. You do not have to suffer hours of traditional cardio workouts to get the body you want. High intensity full body training and multi-joint training exercises actually helped me in getting rid of my belly fat effectively in less time.

When you lift weights as part of your cardio workout, you're toning up your muscles while you burn your belly fat. It's so easy. Routines specially designed by understanding your body, is the effective way to getting rid of love handles. This approach has been studied and developed carefully by certified trainers.

Jogging or stair climbing is actually considered a slow cardio workout to get rid of your belly fat. If you opt for a strategic workout that includes high intensity push-ups, crunches and lunges (to name a few), your metabolic rate will be boosted. This is a really effective way to getting rid of love handles.

The combination of strength and cardio exercise I'm recommending is an innovative new approach to get rid of your love handles and flabs. It's easy to do and it won't take as much time as a traditional workout would. In fact, 5 minutes of a high intensity full body work out will already get your heart pumping. The magic is in combining your muscle strength work out in a 'cardio way' to get the most effective results.

Moles on Skin - Are They Good Or Bad?

The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology calls a mole a nevus (plural: nevi) which is Latin for "spot". Moles that a person is born with are called congenital nevi, while those that occur later are known as acquired nevi. Their brown color is caused by melanin, i.e. skin pigment. They can appear on their own or in groups.

Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw had a mole on her chin which didn't prevent her from becoming a huge sex symbol. She had it removed a year ago, after which some people find her unrecognizable. Many stars considered beautiful have had moles: to name but 14 we have Elizabeth Taylor, Brigitte Nielsen, Paula Abdul, Shannen Doherty, Robert de Niro, Mariah Carey, Anna Nicole Smith, Carmen Electra, Pink, Marilyn Monroe, Cindy Crawford, Gloria Estefan, Janet Jackson and Telly Savalas.

The Japanese term for a beautiful woman with a mole is hokuro bijin. Some attractive manga characters have moles, obviously a deliberate decision on the part of the creators. One Japanese woman was perturbed when asked if she would have her mole removed, saying it was her shirushi (the mark by which one is known) and that without her mole, people wouldn't recognize her in the afterlife and she would spent all eternity alone. Japanese don't get more moles than other races, but what moles they do get are quite noticeable against their light skin.

Brent Moelleken, M.D., said, "Many more patient are having 'beauty marks' removed. Moles that become large and unsightly are prime candidates for removal". Throughout history, moles have been sported by witches, frogs and other creatures of the shadows.

In the 1700s, Richard Sanders (1613-1687) created a pseudoscience that gained in popularity, holding that every facial mole had a matching birthmark elsewhere on the body. If you could find out where both marks were, you could gain insight into a person's character, so a man with a mole on the bridge of the nose and another on his right thigh would be a person of good mood destined to receive a sizable inheritance.

Methods of Chinese and Japanese fortune-telling also use moles.

A recent study has found that moles could be associated with youthfulness. Nature doesn't give us something for no reason, so it is possible that moles serve a purpose other than increasing the risk of melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

A team led by consultant dermatologist Dr Veronique Bataille studied the DNA of over 900 sets of female twins. They were looking at telomeres, clumps of DNA that restrict the ends of chromosomes. They get shorter as cells partition over time, and previous studies discovered that long telomeres are likely to be younger.

The study, published in Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers & Prevention, showed that those with more than 100 moles usually had longer telomeres than people with less than 25. The difference in length was tantamount to six or seven years of aging.

Dr Bataille pointed out that while a person with more than 100 moles is ten times more likely to develop skin cancer, the overall chance of developing the disease was still low.

Weight Training For Women in Easy Stages

It is every woman's dream to have a svelte like figure, but since not all of us have a physique like Cindy Crawford's, we can still be lean and have a healthier figure without going to extremes. Most women will agree that looking good is hard work. This is when weight training for women can help. A lean and fit body will help you have a more energetic and healthy lifestyle. Though it's a fact that men burn calories faster than women; this statement is still relative depending on each person's body type.

Consider first the areas you want to define. One of the big problems with obesity in women is Osteoporosis or brittle bones. As soon as we get older the amount of calcium in our bones decreases, making our bones weak. Weight training, as well as good diet and proper intake of calcium make the body resilient to the harsh effects brought on by Osteoporosis. If you need to lose weight, consider first which areas you want to define. There is a myth regarding weight training for women. People say that women will generate bulky muscles similar to those of men when performing this form of exercise. However, since women's bodies are different from men's, the results vary too.

Choose the type of exercise that works best for you. There are different types of exercises suited to different types of people. Go to the gym first and check what weight training options they offer specifically for women. Choose the one that you are comfortable doing. Remember exercising to a good physique takes time and you need to know which one works for you. You should ask for a consultation with a trainer to help you get started.

Work on a schedule and use one that fits in with your lifestyle. If you plan to workout in a gym then aim to visit the gym two or three times a week and this will help your body to adjust quickly to the weight training. Always warm up and do some aerobic exercises before you start on the machines. Without a proper warm-up, you risk your muscles getting strained and easily exhausted after using an exercise machine. You can also use the gym to talk to other people and ask them about their weight training regimes. They will very likely share an insight or two with you.

Do not forget, what you eat is important. This is one of the reasons why women doing weight training get frustrated after a work-out. After exercising, they take a break and feel hungry and so order a heavy meal. You must incorporate healthy eating with your weight training.

Stick to your plan. If you want to have and maintain your physique, you need to be consistent with your work-out. Sometimes, the downside to exercising, is once a woman gets the body she has always wanted, she will stop training. Even if you have achieved your goal, weight training for women still involves sticking with your diet and your training program. Remember, no gain without pain, so learn to enjoy it.

Client Satisfaction Is The Key To Success

In business we are often taught in school and from peers to focus on profits and revenues as the key indicators to success in Small Business consulting (or at least that is how we are measured against others in our industry). I am going too respectfully argue this point simply because if you are completely focused on having the highest revenues and in turn driving more profit to your bottom line you are losing sight of what I believe is the most vital and critical key performance indicator for any business large or small and new or old.

Complete Client Satisfaction is the only key performance indicator that is crucial to our success in business. When we are focused on taking care of our client's best interest and ensure that we are delivering the most effective level of service, innovative solutions that bring value to our client base, billing them properly and timely only then will all the other stuff (profits, cash flow and anything else) will automatically fall into place.

When our teams focus on providing only the best quality support and the right technology solution that meet our client's business needs, only then will our businesses begin to flourish and be on the road to complete success (also this is the one least travelled). So why is client satisfaction so important? This is a very good question, when we achieve total client satisfaction we have happy clients who enjoy transacting with us (great CSAT scores), we have clients that pay their invoices on time (cash flow is healthy), our clients easily refer business to our companies (healthy pipeline), the clients we are working with continue to invest in solutions that our companies recommend (increased sales revenues) and maybe the most important reason why it important for our business to have a very high client satisfaction score is this, we will have employees that enjoying taking care of the clients that they are assigned, this will increase staff retention, creating a bond between our teams and our client base and we have a bunch of happy people who enjoy coming to work and transacting with our corporations.

Who is responsible for ensuring that our businesses can maintain a high level of client satisfaction? Ultimately, this is the responsibility of our Directors of Business Development, not our operations manager, not our service manager and not our staff. Why is it important that your Business Development person take the charge in ensuring that client satisfaction remain high? In my experience this is the key person who maintains the relationship between our firms and our vendors, our companies and the local business market and when this key role is firing on all cylinders, our Business Development Director can bring together all components to ensure solutions are recommended to our clients, concerns from our clients can be escalated to our vendor partners openly and rapidly and our overall business goals are met across the board.

In business today, it is important that everyone on our teams understand the goals, mission, vision and values of our company and the effect that having this key information has with our overall client satisfaction. When we have our team aligned with our business goals that client satisfaction is important, our employees and staff are now empowered to make key decisions at our client's office, in our client meetings, with every interaction they are now focused on ensuring that the client is completely satisfied with the dealings that they are having with our businesses. It is very important to our business success to empower the teams we have in place to make critical business decisions that is aligned with our business goals, mission, vision and values.

We must also always deliver what our clients are asking for, this is another critical area to ensuring that our clients are satisfied, take steps to understand what they need and what they are looking for. There are many great tools available today to assist in the information gathering, however, no tool that is available (surveys, newsletters or other technology) compares to face to face interaction. It is important to maintain a balance of face to face interaction with other communication methods. We must get up from behind our desks and visit the people we are taking care of.

Client satisfaction is the golden egg to success, especially today during the uncertain economic times we live in today; don't worry about the price of gas or the investment in time. When we take of our clients they will ensure that they take care of us. When we have our businesses focused on ensuring that we are creating a positive experience with every client interaction we are definitely on the road to success. Here is my formula to success in small business IT consulting:

High CSAT = Profit and Revenue

Low CSAT = Broke

Orio Circus "Victoria"

Los Angeles, CA — Hip-hop's newest club-conquering dynamic duo, Orio Circus, are set to have their debut single "Victoria" released by legendary label Delicious Vinyl. Comprised of legendary Detroit MC Frank Nitt (Frank N Dank) and SoCal surfer-turned-rapper Grim-Ace, Orio Circus embodies the new style of ebony and ivory working together in body-movin' harmony. Produced by up-and-comer Lazy Boy, "Victoria" is a sly nod to the famous lingerie one-stop that need not be fully named, with Frank rapping: "Hey ladies, just though you should know that/ OC keep it tight like a bra strap!" With its bait-and-switch guitar lick, horny horn line, and hip-shaking hi-hats, the song's pop appeal is as instant as its urgent refrain to "Show me your Victoria...!" Frank Nitt, who grew up in Detroit watching black and white Tigers like Alan Trammel and Lou Whittaker working together on the baseball diamond, understands the potency of racial harmony: "Grim-Ace is a six foot tall white guy, the quintessential surfer-skater, and I'm the 5'5″ inner city black guy, I talk my slang and my pants hang low. We're opposites, but we go well together, y'know, like that famous cookie!" "I'd run into Grim-Ace in LA," explains Frank, "and he asked me to come by and hear some of what he was working on. I liked what he was doing, so we started working on some songs together — rugged hip-hop joints. Then Lazy Boy sent us an uptempo track that inspired us to take Orio Circus to the next level, and we turned ...

The Compounding Effect Of Choice

Most people are familiar with the compounding effect of money, as its key to the long-term accumulation of wealth. Saving a few hundred dollars each month grows into tens of thousands over time. The principles of compounding also apply in every area of our lives, whether we like it or not. Internalize the simple principles in this article and adopt them for a lifetime. Doing so will allow you to more easily stay focused on what is most important to you and take the necessary action steps to realize your desires. Willingness is the key.
The compounding effect of choice is made up of two simple principles. The Mastery and Mediocrity diagram below illustrates this concept visually.

Principle #1

"It is the simple disciplines (choices), that don't seem to make any difference at all in the moment; HOWEVER repeated over time, the compounded affect makes all the difference in the world."

Principle #2

"It is the simple errors in judgment, that don't seem to make any difference at all in the moment; HOWEVER repeated over time, the compounded affect makes all the difference in the world."

Principle #1 in Action - "Simple Disciplines" - Focus on the upper side of the graph above. The x-axis on the diagram depicts the role of time, while the y-axis represents the growth in mastery or success of something important to you. This could represent progress in your profession, leadership, relationships, health, mothering, creative expression or cultivating a sense of inner peace.

Each tick mark in the diagram represents one action, or "one simple discipline" or "one simple choice." Unfortunately, the choices acted upon in the earlier stages don't reflect much growth for quite awhile. Much like saving a few hundred dollars each month, it doesn't SEEM to add up to much in the beginning stages. Without referencing this graph, it may feel discouraging and you may choose to quit before reaching your desired outcome. However, if you were to continue repeating "it's the simple disciplines (choices), that don't seem to make any difference at all," AND continued to take simple actions, the compounding effect would eventually kick in. You would ultimately experience the growth and success you desire. It's simply a matter of time - AND CONSISTENT action. How often do people quit when they are nearing the finish line?

There are three important elements in the compounding effect of choice.

1. Compounding Effect - Your actions will ADD upon the others.

2. Choice - ACTING or NOT ACTING is always a choice. Choose consciously. Frequency and effort make a difference.

3. Time - Actions taken over time GROW.

This visual representation has proven useful to me throughout the last decade and continues to keep me on track with important objectives. Here's one of the ways I used this principle to support my goal of fitness.

Personal Story - When I lived in Dallas, I frequented the gym. There were many days that I did NOT feel like going. Once there, often times I didn't feel like being there. Can you relate? However, I simply repeated the following words in my head, over and over again. "It's the simple disciplines, that don't seem to make any difference at all, in the moment, but the compounded effect makes all the difference in the world." Clearly, my one little workout wasn't transforming my body into a Cindy Crawford. I could see that each time I looked in the mirror. It WAS discouraging in the moment. However, I had faith in the process, and these simple words of wisdom. I trusted the compounded effect of many workouts over time, combined with a matching nutrition regime, WOULD give me results. My current level of fitness is a clear reflection that the compounding effect of choice works!

Ultimately, the habit of working out became second nature, and I rarely need to repeat, "It's the simple disciplines, that don't seem to make any difference at all, in the moment, but the compounded effect makes all the difference in the world." However, in the early days, I used it almost every day!

Brand this principle into your being, and use it anytime you feel discouraged or uninspired to act (I do!). It's a great reminder of the bigger picture.

Simple Disciplines - Simple Choices - Reflect upon the compounding effect for each of the simple choices below. The principle applies well in health, relationships, business success, money, self-care, self-esteem and in evolving one's Consciousness. The principle also applies well in cultivating internal emotions and states of being, such as love, joy and inner peace. Anything repeated over time ultimately creates a compounded result. What results in your life would you like to compound?

o Reading 10 pages of a good book

o Eating healthfully

o Spending quality time with your children

o Working out

o A simple act of kindness

o Saying, "I love you" to a loved one

o Yoga or stretching

o Meditating

o Focusing on what you appreciate

o Avoiding sugar or caffeine

o Drinking a gallon of water per day

o Saving money

o Attending seminars

o Listening to educational CD's

o Getting up early

o Cleaning off your desk each day

o Volunteering

o Listening closely to others

o One extra hour of work

o Being honest

o Being on time

o Pursuing a dream

"It is the simple disciplines (choices), that don't seem to make any difference at all in the moment; HOWEVER repeated over time, the compounded affect makes all the difference in the world."

Principle #2 in Action - "simple errors in judgment":

If you want to successfully boil a frog, it's best to turn the heat up over time or the frog will jump out and escape. I wish no ill will to frogs, however it makes the point about "simple errors in judgment." These little actions or non-actions seem relatively harmless initially and for a period of time. However, the compounding effect leads us to less pleasant results in our lives. This is the model of mediocrity.

"It is the SIMPLE ERRORS in judgment, that don't seem to make any difference at all in the moment, HOWEVER repeated over time, the compounded effect makes all the difference in the world."

This principle is clearly illustrated in the lower portion of the diagram above. Again the x-axis depicts the role of time, while the y-axis represents the accumulated negative impact or atrophy resulting from specific habits. The results range from mediocrity to disaster. This graph may depict the negative compounding effect of actions or non-action in any of the categories named above. I find it most useful to apply this principle to the habits I would like to change.

Each tick mark in the diagram represents one "simple error in judgment." As is the case in accumulating credit card debt, a little each month doesn't seem like a big deal. The negative consequences don't reflect much impact for quite awhile. Without referencing this graph, it may seem that watching two hours of mindless television each night isn't hurting you in any way. You may simply continue watching every day, while complaining about needing more time to pursue an important dream. Two hours of television is relatively harmless. However, the compounding effect of this "simple error in judgment" translates to 728 hours of television per year! That is over 30 full 24-hour days in a year!

Remember these elements in the negative compounding effect of choice.

1. Compounding Effect - Negative actions and non-actions ADD upon the others and create a cumulative effect.

2. Choice - ACTING or NOT ACTING is always a choice. Choose consciously. Frequency and lack of effort make a different.

3. Time - "Simple errors in judgment" create ATROPHY over time.

Examples of "Simple Errors in Judgment." - Reflect upon the impact of the items I've included on the list below. Some of these may initially appear harmless. What consequences could result over time in compounding these "simple errors in judgment"? What other "simple errors of judgment" would you add to this list? This list is not intended to elicit feelings of guilt or remorse. We have all exercised "simple errors in judgment." Use this list to stimulate awareness. In later chapters, you may or may not consciously decide to address something from this list.

o Watching mindless television

o Not saving money

o Spending more than you earn

o Being late

o Complaining

o Gossiping

o Eating a cheeseburger or fries

o Overeating

o Spending time with negative people

o Dwelling on negative thoughts

o Interrupting people

o Not being fully present when listening

o Speeding

o Smoking or using drugs

o Disorganization

o Listening to loud, abrasive music

o Staying up late or sleeping in

o Excessive time on the internet

o Not working out

o Not being friendly with others

o Criticizing yourself or others

o Procrastination

o Maintaining a stressful lifestyle

o Not taking personal time for yourself

o Laziness - performing below your capacity

o Not expressing appreciation to your partner

o Time in a dead-end job

o Too many desserts or candy

o Arguing

Contrast and Compare - Another way to use this model is to compare a "simple discipline" or "simple error in judgment" with another.

o If you read 10 pages of a good book today, and I don't, the difference between you and I on that day is pretty negligible. In fact, after a month, the difference is still not that great. However, if you continue to read 10 pages of a good book each day for the next ten years, the difference between you and I will be CONSIDERABLE. If you focused your attention in a specific area of focus over that ten-year period, it's likely that you would be an expert in your field.

o If I eat one ice cream bar today, and you don't, the difference in our level of health is not very significant. However, if I eat an ice cream bar every day for a whole year, and you don't - all things being equal - there will likely be a CONSIDERABLE difference in our health.
Cumulative Discipline - Generally, it's not just about the ONE single discipline, or one simple error of judgment. Some of our choices support our growth, and some don't. Becoming aware of these choices is the first step. Seeing a visual representation of their respective impact is also useful in fine-tuning our choice points. There will be numerous simple disciplines you'll apply over and over again on your path of growth. Enjoy the journey.
